One of those directors who you wish had made a few more films. Always interesting and thoughtful in his interviews.

He had a torrid time working on A Prayer for the Dying with Mickey Rourke so much so they both disown the film, when you watch the film you can see it had production problems and not the film as intended.

Another sad loss - albeit at a decent age - and director of two films I hold very dear, for quite different reasons - Get Carter and Flash Gordon. In many ways, that they are such diametrically different films gives tell to Hodges' remarkable versatility and talent. Great films, both, but you'd swear blind they had different directors at the helm.
I really must seek out Pulp, which I've never seen.
RIP and respect.

I don’t think I’ve seen it for about 20 years but I enjoyed it when I did Alan. Flash Gordon and Get Carter are superb movies. RIP Mike Hodges.

'Get Carter' is a film I probably shouldn't have seen late at night on TV as a teenager, and I remember being blown away by it for all sorts of reasons. With every re-watch I find something I hadn't previously noticed, and the way it's lit and shot is masterful, so different to other films of the era. If you're going to be remembered for something, be remembered for something that good. RIP.
