The frontman of the most important group in my lifetime has passed at 63. To say I'm gutted is an understatement. So pleased I got to see The Specials live in 2009 at what was more of religious experience than just a gig of a lifetime.
RIP Terry

The voice of the band of a generation. I loved the Specials (and Fun Boy Three). He was/is a legend. How sh*t that he is now gone. RIP

Wow - that’s a terrible shock. Obviously best known for The Specials and Fun Boy Three but I thought that the Colourfield were very underrated. Having a certain Bunnyman on bass occasionally didn’t hurt. The Specials and The Jam were very important bands for me in 1979 and their output still stands up today.
RIP.

Really quite shocked to read about this on the BBC News website a few minutes ago. Just 63. Far too young. Terrific vocalist and many classics of the era for The Specials and Fun Boy Three. RIP.

Really shocked to read this. The Specials were unique, and so was Terry Hall's voice. RIP

Too Much Too Young, Gangsters, Ghost Town... brilliant songs from a better time. Not really a fan as such, but you don't get songs like that anymore. And I liked the one FB3 did with Bananarama too.

Very sad news. I think he'll mainly be remembered for 'The Specials' and as much as I liked their music i'd have to say my favourite track with TH as lead is 'Tunnel of Love' by Fun Boy Three.
Taken way too soon, RIP.

'Rat Race' and 'Ghost Town' probably my two favourite Specials singles.
It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it - Terry certainly did it well, and will be sorely missed.
R.I.P. Terry Hall.

Very sad news. 63 is far too young. The Specials were a very important band of my youth. Too many classic songs to list but Ghost Town will last forever. Only saw them once in 2019. Also enjoyed FB3 and The Colourfield. RIP Terry.

Similar thoughts and feelings to those expressed by others on this thread: The Specials were a band who captured the spirit of the times when they broke through in the late-70s and, for me, a lot of their music is really emblematic of that time as the 1970s turned into the 80s.
Terry Hall was great front man with his deadpan style, which I always found slightly unsettling but it somehow suited him and, for me, it all fell into place when he revealed what had happened to him as a schoolboy, which was hideous and I suppose never left him. I hope Terry has found some peace now.
Leaving that aside, I preferred his work with the Specials to Fun Boy Three. 'Gangsters' and 'Too Much too Young' were great tracks and 'Ghost Town', well, talk about capturing a zeitgeist. I did like 'Our Lips are Sealed' by FB3 though, to be fair.
Final point - 'Enjoy Yourself it's Later Than You Think' was another Specials hit - and never a truer word said when you think Terry Hall's just died at 63. Makes you think, we don't get many years on this earth do we boys?...
