In the earliest part of his career, Vangelis Papathanassiou was in the prog rock band Aphrodite's Child with Demis Roussos.
They did epic tracks like 'Rain and Tears' (a UK hit single in 1968) and 'The Four Horsemen' (1970). Like many of the greatest prog bands (e.g. Traffic, Family) they went their seperate ways as innocent creativity gave way to focused corporatism around 1972.
Demis of course became a housewives favourite by adopting an MOR style for his solo career, Vangelis was more experimental and continued a prog focus by working with Jon Anderson of Yes.
I am sorry to hear of his death.
R.I.P. Vangelis.

Sad to hear this. One of the most well known and recognisable film themes ever. Alan Freeman played and used excerpts from Vangelis 1975 album Heaven And Hell (which is like a soundtrack without a film) during his Radio 1 Saturday Rock Show back in the day. That album was the beginning of the very fruitful creative partnership with Jon Anderson from Yes. They both wrote State of Independence which Donna Summer did a much better version of than their own. Aphrodites Child was the band Vangelis started out in with Demis Roussos and Alan Freeman used to play them as well - The Four Horsemen is a brilliant track from the album 666. A great talent. RIP

If he'd only ever recorded the Blade Runner soundtrack I'd consider him a legend but he did so much more in his career. Very sorry to hear that he's left us, particularly considering that he's been producing new music in recent years, with presumably his last album - Juno to Jupiter - issued only last year.
RIP.

Sorry to hear about his passing. I listened to my Blade Runner CD tonight. It's a shame that the original sound track of Blade Runner took so long to be released. I enjoyed his work with Jon Anderson and his other soundtracks.

Aphrodite's Child are under-rated in the wider scheme of things, their success being eclipsed by the later work of Demis and Vangelis.

If the Chariots Of Fire theme doesn't stir your soul then you don't have one, But as outlined above there was so much more to Vangelis than that, a visionary in his use of electronic music, what a genius idea to use synthesisers in a movie set in the 1920s, David Puttnam tells of meeting him for lunch and Vangelis taking a cassette from his pocket and they went outside to Puttnam's car and hearing Chariots for the first time, what a moment that must have been. His best of CD has been in the player in my car for almost a year at this stage, he did other soundtracks apart from the above and Blade Runner too of course. Did magical songs, I'll Find My Way Home, and I Hear You Now with Jon Anderson too. Also did the anthem for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Glad to see so much love for him here on the forum. Rest In Peace Big Man. Vangelis - Anthem: The 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea / Japan - YouTube

Another one of my favourite synth composers passed away not long after Klaus Schultze passed away. Vangelis’ soundtrack to Bladerunner will remain one of the finest synth soundtracks of all time. I will listen to my Vangelis album collection tonight with a bottle of wine in tribute to the synth god. RIP Vangelis.

RIP Vangelis.
I remember I was asked to play 'Chariots of Fire' at at a school concert when I was 15. The girly playing the saxophone part ending up becoming my girlfriend. Happy days and a great tune I had the 7" in the early 80s.

My Vangelis moment was a few years ago when my wife and I were on a cruise of the Caribbean at Christmas. The ship's first stop after leaving Southampton was at La Corunna in Spain (where we had the chance to ride Segways around town - a great experience). As the port crew were preparing to cast off, the sun was starting to set and was lighting up the town as if it was on fire.
And as the ship moved a few feet away from the dock, the DJ played Vangelis's Conquest of Paradise at full belt over the ship's tannoy. It was one hell of a powerful moment: that stirring music and the thought that this was the last time we would see land until we reached Barbados in six days' time.
Thank you for the music, Vangelis - Chariots of Fire, Conquest of Paradise and everything else.

A Pioneer of elctronic music who did some very fine film scores outwith the usual Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner scores he is most familiar with.
