Very sad to hear this news yesterday . Although Dennis Waterman starred in many shows , he was best remembered for The Sweeney & Minder , two of my all time favourite programmes . Now re united with his former colleagues , R.I.P Dennis .

At work yesterday afternoon, Dennis's name appeared on a phone notification. I could sort of sense why this would be so. When you think about it, Dennis was one of the biggest stars in the period when TV was most watched (c. mid 70s - mid 80s). 'The Sweeney' and 'Minder' are prime reasons why people are together on this forum. He was of course known prior in films, and continued to be a TV star after his role in 'Minder' ended, which was in the same year that satellite broadcasting began to make inroads into the BBC & ITV dominance. He appeared in two major sitcoms and varied works until, after the Millenium, he began the long-running role in 'New Tricks'. This was alongside career contemporaries James Bolam and Alun Armstrong, and the series often had lead guest parts played by fellow senior actors. Dennis, 74 is way too young R.I.P. Dennis Waterman.

Apologies if this is in bad taste. Local Notes There was much sadness in the local area on Sunday with news of the sudden passing of popular local man Terrence (Terry) McCann at the age of 74. A native of the area, Terry was a successful and highly talented boxer in his younger days and was tipped as a future British champion before injury cut short a highly promising career. He retained a lifelong passion for the sweet science and his words of encouragement and advice were much sought and valued by any aspiring local fighter. Football was Terry's other sporting interest, and he was to be found at Craven Cottage and Stamford Bridge on alternate weekends. Only days ago he had celebrated the Cottagers' promotion to the Premier league. Terry was employed for many years with the local firm of A.E. Daley Ltd, chiefly in the motor and general wholesale trade departments of that concern. He would regale any company with the often hilarious escapades he enjoyed in his time with the firm. He will be remembered as a friend to all, always ready with a sympathetic ear and a helping hand to all who needed it, without seeking anything in return. Terry will be sadly missed by his many friends in local sporting and business circles, and the community as a whole. Rest in Peace.Bad Taste?.. the Polar opposite, It was beautiful . Thank you. RIP Terry, Settle in for your long sleep by the light of your new sun, My son.

Gutted when I heard this yesterday. Dennis was one of my heroes. Apparently, when I was 4 years old Dennis and John Thaw were in a London beer garden whilst filming The Sweeney nearby. As 4 year olds do I toddled off to their table and both John and Dennis gave me a little pat on the head and said hello.
RIP Dennis.

Oh no, just learnt this.... RIP It had not made the news here in Germany. Anybody know what happened as Wikipedia only stated he died in Spain? He apparently had a house in Spain and died while he was living there.

That one works. Thanks, Billy Edit: Just read it. A bit lukewarm in my opinion, but I suppose Dennis Waterman (and everything that goes with him) is about as alien as it gets to the Guardian-BBC axis that dominates much of the media today.

Pleased (so to speak) to see that Dennis is featured prominently on the front pages of every national newspaper this morning.
Watched The Sweeney episode 'Jigsaw' again last night. This series never gets old. George trying to cut the grass, whilst being harangued by his nagging wife, is actually one of the many highlights of this episode. When George finally snaps, and forcefully defends Regan, it is indeed one of his finest moments.

When my parents divorced in the mid 1970s,I used to see Dad on Thursday nights, we used to watch the Sweeney and then later on Minder and Dad would take me home at 10pm on the dot. RIP the fantastic Dennis Waterman Same here mate.... When Mum & Dad got divorced in the late 70's, me & the old man would watch 'Minder' together before he dropped me back to my Nan's where I was sent to live. It's probably one of the few bits of childhood driftwood that I cling onto with any hapiness. I feel like I've lost a favourite uncle, Felt the same when Arthur passed too. I'll be having a lager at lunchtime today in Leigh on sea raising a pint to my videodrome TVscreen family. Gawd bless'em all.

Very sad news, I think Dennis/Terry was a hero to all of us.
Dennis should also, in my opinion, be credited with keeping Minder real and stopping the series degenerating by leaving when he did-that must have been hard for him to do.
As others have said tragically young, does anyone know if he was ill?
RIP Dennis

Just came in here, and saw the news.. I'm well gutted. Especially as I never got to thank either him, nor George, for the wonderful series they helped give us. They were both not only astounding actors, but as others have said, heroes, of TV.
RIP Dennis..and now surely looking to see more Minder this year in his memory.

George Layton was suggesting on twitter that he was hoping to meet up again with Dennis this August. Due to the Pandemic, I don't think they had met since that photo taken in Spain in 2019. It was nice to see many actors from the early years of Minder remembering their appearances yesterday, Vicki Michelle, Linda Regan (I hadn't realised she was in episode 1), Tim Healy, Mike Grady (who I watched last night in the episode I picked out - The Bengal Tiger)

A real gent when I met him in Bath in 1999 : while happily signing the album page already autographed by George Cole, Dennis remarked `ah - the ole King' . Both giants and irreplaceable. Gold bless

Obviously I'm not going to complain about an opportunity to see Susie Ann Watkins in that waitress outfit again (Terry would have approved...) but it's pretty illustrative of how ITV treats the series nowadays that they didn't swap it out for a Dennis episode today.

I only found out this morning, when my Brother told me at work. I was shocked, I am not aware of recent health issues. Obviously led quite a hard life, I was only watching one of the series 7 shows a couple of weeks ago, thinking he is one of the only ‘original actors’ from the this era of TV, along with Martin Shaw, then this. As other people have commented, grew up watching him in Minder, and Sweeney repeats . Another unique character taken.

Very sad news. ITV should clear some of their schedule this week and show some of the hugely popular series that Dennis made for showing on ITV. R.I.P. Dennis - we'll all continue watching you for as long as we can. I thought the same, they shown a more ‘in tribute’ showing of Professionals when Lewis Collins passed away (passing around a bottle of champagne at the end) , along with when George Cole passed away ( the close up at the end of Fiddler On The Hoof) if I remember correctly
