Prolific German actor, no doubt familiar to most of us from films like The Wild Geese and A Bridge Too Far. Grew up in Hitler's Germany, the child of fanatical National Socialist parents, briefly conscripted into the Waffen SS as a teenager at the end of the war. As an adult campaigned against far right extremism - his character in The Wild Geese perhaps symbolises the course his life took.
I think my favourite performance of his is Captain Potzdorf in Barry Lyndon, very much the Prussian officer, but with a knowing sense of humour e.g his delayed reaction to being told by Barry that his uncle is the British ambassador and called O'Grady.
