Anyone my age (60) may remember when The Old Grey Whistle Test screened the video for the title track of Bat Out Of Hell in early 1978 and the huge reaction to it. Bat Out Of Hell is one of those defining USA AOR albums of the 1970s (like Boston‘s debut). There is no rock album like it - part Broadway, part Wagner, part Spector. The guy had a huge presence and a huge voice and was a real one off as was Jim Steinman who died last year. RIP

RIP Meat Loaf, so many superb songs, with one of my favourites being "I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)" - the guitar solo part is utterly superb. I also like "Rock'n'roll Dreams Come True".
I have one memory of him appearing on a UK game show, maybe "It's a Knockout", and his wife was on there shouting "Come on Meaty" all the time.
Meat Loaf is a rock legend, RIP.

RIP Meat Loaf, so many superb songs, with one of my favourites being "I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)" - the guitar solo part is utterly superb. I also like "Rock'n'roll Dreams Come True". Funnily enough they are my two favorites of his, I think we are around the same age so we are probably more familiar with his 90's hits rather than his 70's/80's ones (although they are good) as we are too young to remember them when they came out. At around the same time as 'I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)' came out Queen 'Heaven For Everyone' was a big hit and Def Leppard with 'Love & Hate Collide' was also in the top ten so a bit of an 80's thing going on in Oct/Nov 95 I can remember having a conversation with a girl I'd just met in school in November 1995 about Meatloaf's new song 'I'd Lie For You (And That's The Truth)' it seems like only yesterday not over 26 years ago. I have the song on my 'Now 32' CD that I had for Christmas 1995 (sigh happy times). Meatloaf had such a unique style both in song and voice and I don't think anyone tried to copy him (or if they did they weren't successful). RIP

I best remember him not for his music which I always found too bombastic and not that good. But he was real good in The 51st State where he quite funnily played a drug baron ordering drugs off Samuel L Jackson minder.proboards.com/thread/1568/51st-state-2001RIP.

Bombastic was the whole point. Meat/Steinman always took the view ''If a thing is worth doing, it's worth overdoing'' An assault on the senses and on the whole pure bliss.

I saw him play at Leeds castle in July 2005. It was raining and windy and the sound was not great, but his performance was fantastic!! Well worth the three and a half mile walk home that night!
R.I.P sir!

Not a huge fan but mention if his OGWT performances prompted me to watch 'Paradise by the dashboard light' again. All 8 minutes of it. What a performance by all.

I didn't take to his music over the whole of his career, but there is no doubt he was a showman and 'Bat Out Of Hell' is a great album.
R.I.P. Meatloaf.
Gideon Coe on BBC 6Music played this interesting track the other evening, a pre-solo psych pop band from 1968:
