The go-to guy if a Frenchman was needed on UK TV and movies for decades, seems to have been in continual work since the mid 1950s. RIP

Sorry to hear this. Although to be honest I didn't realise he was still with us. Famously he was in Fawlty Towers but I always remember hom playing a French onion seller in a non-comedy role in When the Boat Comes In, waearing a stripy jumper with his bike and a string of onions round his neck.

Strangely enough gustav it was the French themselves who started that, these were onion farmers who lived near the Brittany and Normandy ports, they would take the ferries to the UK and spend weeks at a time selling from door to door, from the 1920s onwards, to make themselves stand out they went the whole hog with the outfits and bikes. A fleet of vans would meet the ferries from France picking the onions up and distributing to the sellers around the country. Off season the sellers would go back home to France. Though some met English girls and settled. Onion Johnny - Wikipedia

When I first saw this episode of When the boat comes in I thought it was using such a cliche that it couldn't be taken seriously but it really is rooted in fact. French onion sellers coming over on their bikes and going door to door just as you describe. I am a big fan of When the boat comes in and it did always tend to quite a high degree of accuracy in the social conditions it presented so I was pleased to discover that this was fact rather than just a comedy image. He was in a lot of stuff for a long time.
