He always came across as a decent guy and the most unlikely looking hard man who proved appearances can be deceiving.
RIP Nobby

Sad news. Nobby had battled dementia for a long time. Very nice man by all accounts.

I listen to Johnny Giles on a podcast regularly (Eamon Dunphy the stand). He was talking about Nobby Stiles on a tribute podcast they did for Stiles and Giles reckoned he was a gent and his hard man reputation was overblown. Everyone had to be a hard man in those days. You had to be able to look after yourself. Nobby Stiles won a World Cup and a European Cup in 3 years between 66 and 68. The World Cup squad got a grand a man supposedly for winning the biggest prize in football and there was no nonsense and airs and graces about that generation of men.
Nobby was married to Johnny's sister so he knew him well his whole life.
