Often cast as tough guys, heavies and cops etc. But did a fair amount of comedy too, appearing in Alexi Sayle's Stuff and I think he was Simon Pegg's Dad in Hippies as well?
He's really good in a rare leading role in the UK segment of Eurocops as a detective who has a breakdown after being involved in a series of distressing cases. Think it was called "Tears for George". Very bleak.

I can remember him playing a blind heavy handcuffed to main character Bill Masen in the BBC's excellent 1981 making of 'Day Of The Triffids'.
When a blind girl thanks Bill for helping the blind party, John Benfield's character snorts "Ha! He's got no bloody choice, girl!" Still the most memorable line in the whole series.

Heard about this yesterday. Sad news. Saw him in quite a few things over the years. Good, solid actor. RIP John.

Never knew the name, but certainly knew his face. RIP John Likewise. The face is very familiar but the name. R.I.P. John Benfield. No kidding! I remember this guy. There was a period in Uk telly from the mid-80's through to the mid-90's when the tv companies seemed to take less and less chances with casting and instead relied on trusted faces. Enter John Benfield, who seemed to play the lead copper in just about every detective show on the air around that time. I mean, I'm sure he didn't play every role but for awhile it sure as hell seemed like it. You literally couldn't turn on the tv in the evenings without seeing him playing yet another copper in something. It got kind of silly after awhile, it was like 'Aren't there any other actors who can play cops other than this guy?' :-) But he was a good actor and proved it when he got roles that stretched him a bit. Anyway, RIP.

That's sad news at a relatively young age.
Remember him playing the role of Kev in 2/3 episodes of 'Prospects', which could easily have been a development of the character he played 'Back In Good Old England'.
RIP.

I bought it from Network a few years ago. Must find time to watch it...along with all the other fantastic stuff I've got to watch! Just not enough hours in the day.
