Actor Ian Holm has died. I always remember him as Napoleon in Time Bandits and he was first choice to play Donald Nielson in the 1977 film 'The Black Panther'. RIP Ian.

That's sad to learn as he was a fine actor who appeared in some great films.
RIP Sir

He played Bilbo Baggins in Lord Of The Rings. RIP Ian. I initially thought Gandalf when I heard the news, but had the wrong Ian. RIP Ian Holm. Alien and The Fifth Element were also good sci fi roles he had.

He was Bernard Sampson in the Ch4 adaptation of Game, Set and Match, to Len Deighton's annoyance apparently. He isn't necessarily the first person you'd cast if you'd read the books but he's good as the pugnacious working class agent stuck with a bunch of upper class twits and office drones as colleagues. It's one of those series I can watch again and again - shame it isn't available in DVD.
Excellent in so many other things as well, as noted above.

When I think of Ian Holm I instantly think of his rather distasteful little pimp in Pinter’s ‘The Homecoming’. Or the Belgian dude out of Tarzan Greystoke.
He appeared in all sorts of stuff, very prolific and reliable. Tons of those 1970s historical epics, that had a cast made up of British stage actors.
RIP Ian.
