Didn't know that. That's very sad.

I remember him seeming pretty average at Brighton but a really good goal scorer at Liverpool

He was only with us for one season - but what a season. Never struck me as a player who would be vying with Rush or Dalglish for a starting position but absolutely gave his all every time he played and scored some important goals. After he moved to Spain he knew he wasn’t going to be able to play for the final season of his contract because of injury and refused to take his wages, something you’re unlikely to see these days.
RIP.

RIP So do I, I think it is because he was a fringe player, amongst that colossus of talent at the time!... RIP Mike, good player, and nice guy.

RIP. RIP Michael. Yes, a decent player for Liverpool by all accounts. And a really nice guy as testified by the tributes paid to him when he died. What an absolute gentleman he was refusing to accept his wages because he was unable to play in his final season due to injury. An exceptionally benevolent gesture. You're right, felixdeburgh - it would be extremely unlikely that today's Premier League players (the majority anyway) would make such a gesture. See Andros Townsend for details.
