Saw him live in Cardiff in 1999. A top guy and a top show. RIP Kenny.

Just heard and saw Dolly Parton on TV talking about his passing. He was also a good actor. I liked his 80s film Six Pack, as well as his TV Western roles.
RIP, Kenny.

Whenever I hear his name I am reminded of a couple of TV commericals he did around 1970. One was for a record collection of hit songs from the '60s and one was for a way to learn how to play the guitar at home. When I was a little kid those commericals seemed to be on constantly when I was watching my favorite old TV shows.

In Dubai, I once got invited over to a colleague’s house (Mrs Amal) one Friday for lunch. She was one of the Islamic Studies teachers. I got treated to a lovely non-alcoholic lunch and when it all finished, the lady’s husband went off to sleep for the afternoon and I was left smoking a shisha pipe with my colleague and her three daughters.
I’m not a smoker and rarely did the shisha pipe.
They sang some Arabic songs and after a while asked if I’d like to sing some songs. I did. A bit of Tom Jones always goes down a treat. Then the daughters put YouTube on their TV. And what was their favourite song? ‘Lady’ by Kenny Rogers. By the end of it, I was sat in a smoked filled room full of Muslim ladies all crying their eyes out.
What a day....but it just shows you. What some in the West regard as redneck music is a lot more cross cultural than one first assumes.

I didn't take to his out & out C&W records though I don't deny their popularity.
I do like his late-60s psych-tinged period with the First Edition. Similar territory to what Joe South, Tony Joe White and Elvis were doing at that time. 'Somethin's Burnin' in particular was a great single.
R.I.P. Kenny Rogers.
