I bought series 3 of Minder on video a few years ago, and in the episode You Need Hands, I noticed the 'teaser' at the beginning had been cut. As I recall, this featured Terry fighting with Merrick's two henchmen, and it resulted in one of them breaking Terry's wrist. I could understand this scene being cut if the episode was being shown pre-watershed - as it was on my local station several years back - but it's a bit odd it being edited out in a video release. Has this scene also been cut in the DVD version?

Discovered the answer is no.
I wonder why it was removed from the video release. Terry's wrist being stood on wasn't a pleasant sight, but you see a lot worse on TV nowadays. I don't subscribe to Paramount, but apparently they edit out Minder dialogue which is deemed to be un-PC, therefore I imagine they'll delete that scene as well. I think it's important that you screen a programme as it was originally made; rewriting the past - fact or fiction - isn't a good idea, whatever the motives are.

This is a quality episode in my opinion.
Terry is out of action from the start with the pre-title teaser and very soon Mike Reid takes over as Vernon. What has this one got? Dodgy deals, drugs, shooters, great music, car chase, a pub or two, a bulldozer and a few punch-ups - excellent stuff from start to finish this one. We even get a shot of Des & Terry playing Space Invaders on an Atari 2600 console machine and Arthur with a can of Tizer!
Love it!
Here is an small article on Nicola Kimber, who plays Carol - one of the girls that Terry and Des meet at the Auto Pub aka "The Chequered Flag" in Wembley.

I was going to mention Arthur drinking the can of Tizer at the end too. It's one of my favourite scenes. It's so incongruous and must have been done for comic effect. have not had Tizer for ages - it's the same as Irn Bru and Bing I think. I love it when Terry says "bon apple-TIT" too!

Nicole Kimber's on-screen career was only sporadic.

Probably my favourite episode! " Where to Guv? " " Er, the Winchester Club please " " Where? "
Arthur boldly asks for The Winchester Club, like 'everyone' should know where and what it is. And when they get into the Winchester he prompts Dave into giving "the good stuff" when brandy is ordered and asks to be called Mr Daley "just for today."
Arthur was trying to impress Matthews no doubt but I also think he, once again, was trying to portray himself a couple of social classes up the ladder.

This was the first of 5 episodes watched yesterday, throw in a trip to the cinema to see The Martian and my DIY list isn't getting any shorter, oh well.
Another gem of an episode made all the better by an appearance from the late great Mike Read as the culinary connoisseur Vernon, who is sub-contracted in from Lenny Bowman to replace the incapacitated Terry, you just knew it would end in tears.
A great episode from the off. A great script with some cracking lines and some good comedy moments in it and another appearance from the always brilliant Des, series 3 is shaping up very nicely.

A fun episode. Nice to see Terry teamed with Des for most of the episode. I enjoyed Arthur's pretensions to knowing about fine dining. The line about croutons is delivered as only George Cole could.

Is this the only Minder with a pre titles sequence? I can't recall any others. Would anyone have preferred it to have always had one ala Sweeney?

I would guess this episode was one of the first filmed for the 3rd season or a leftover from the 2nd as Arthur is back with his original silver Jag & Terry with the white Capri - it also appears to have taken place during the winter months - The copyright date at the end is still 1981 the same as the rest of the series but this could have been altered - Shame we didn't see more of Mike Reid s character Vernon in other episodes A great episode with plenty of good one liners & the ending battle between the diggers and the Daimler was brilliant - The blue Cortina used by the goons that beat up Terry has the registration MHK543V the same sequence as the red & the green ones that regularly appear in the 1980 episodes of The Professionals

I'd like to have seen Vernon make another appearance or two as well. It would have been easy enough for Arthur to return Lenny Beaumonts favour by lending Terry out in a time of need.
Having said that,Vernon and Terry were diferrent types of Minders i think. You wouldnt have seen Vern on the door of a club or pub. I reckon Beaumont was into bigger things and Vern would more likely carry a gun than risk using his fists. The way he faced a shotgun in this episode showed that it wasnt the first time he'd been threatened i think.

I'm not sure Arthur would be very keen on lending Terry to Lenny Bowman after Vernon betrayed him and started working for Matthews, forcing him to go to the meet. A bit surprised Arthur & Terry are happily sitting in the cafe with Vernon at the end.

Yeah fair enough actually, I never thought of that.
Btw, looking at imdb, there's a character 'Bowmans Heavy' played by Gerry Gurry. I don't recall Bowman having a scene with anyone other than Arthur and Vern.

I think the character 'Bowman's Heavy' (Terry Gurry) must be the guy wearing a suit in the reception area at Bowman's office who initially speaks to Arthur and then shows him in to see Bowman.

The consistency of the quality of the episodes at this time is amazing. Great script from start to finish. The Minder theme doesn't work as well for pre titles sequences. It's not as dramatic as, say The Sweeney or The Professionals opening bars. The scenes at the end with the Des and Terry with the diggers is brilliantly done. I've always liked Arthur's line about the fried bread (crutons). The wintery scenes make me think this could have been the first episode filmed for series 3.

I've always liked Arthur's line about the fried bread (crutons). I agree. The opening scenes leave the viewer thinking that this is quite a gritty episode only to be greeted by the lighthrearted theme tune. Re-fried bread / crouton. Arthur showing that he's not quite ready to be rubbing shoulders with the upper classes just yet!

Great episode this of course, just so much that's good. But it has one of my favourite Arthur quips in this one...when in the car early morning in the field and Arthur needs a leak...he gets caught sneaking out and covers up by going on about ''You think Im going to do a Captain Oates?...'' Quality

Another top notch 5/5 episode, you can see why series 3 is Minder at its very best! Great cast as well. Loved the location filming of Arthur walking the West End streets. Some nice random motors dotted around this episode, too!

One part of this episode that doesn't sit right is the fact that Matthews takes half a kilo of heroin off his 'mule' and not only lives to tell the tale but starts to make a deal on it as well. Surely the 'mule' would be telling the packages' rightful owners what had happened and they would've been on Matthews' tail in a big way.

Quality It is indeed! And for the sake of completeness as minder.org is primarily an information resource - one of Captain Robert Falcon 'Scott of the Antarctic's' team: Captain Lawrence Edward Grace "Titus" Oates was an English army officer, and later an Antarctic explorer, who died during the Terra Nova Expedition. Oates, afflicted with gangrene and frostbite, walked from his tent into a blizzard. His death is seen as an act of self-sacrifice when, aware that his ill health was compromising his three companions' chances of survival, he chose certain death. Source: Wikipedia Fits like a glove in this story with Arthur.
