The great American character actor has died aged 79. He appeared in tons of films and TV over a long career. He is very famous to Star Trek fans for doing all 7 seasons of DS9. He was fantastic as Odo.
He also appeared in 'King Kong' (1976), 'M*A*S*H' (Movie), 'Harry O', 'Eyes of Laura Mars' Benson, plus heaps more films and TV series.
His career spanned 55 years, he was never out of work and has an incredible 228 credits on IMDB.
RIP

I remember him well, there was a US sitcom in the 80s called 'Benson', about a butler to a State Govenor, Rene played the Govenor's rather pompous Chief of Staff. It was shown on TV in Ireland, not sure if it made it across to the UK though. Rest in peace.

Aww no. This is really sad. He was great as Odo in Deep Space Nine. RIP. Always thought DS9 had a good ensemble cast and Rene's monumentally dour Odo was one of the highlights. What could have been a worthy and dull cipher of a character was played exactly right with a lot of straight faced humour. Him and Armin Shimmerman as Quark made a good double act.

Yes, Odo and Quark were great together. Quark would always have some get rich quick scheme with Odo determined to stop it. DS9 was a quality series and they were my favourite characters.

The two could/should have had their own show. Armin Shimmerman paid Rene a lovely tribute on social media.

There was perhaps a touch of Arthur and Chisholm in their two characters' relationship.

Despite being on opposite sides of the law I think Odo and Quark liked and respected each other.
