Tough old school manager who lots of people think was their European Cup winning cup manager in 1982, but left in the February of that season after a falling out with the board (may have been old deadly Doug) and went on to their bitter rivals Birmingham, who he left to take over at West Brom.
He built a great team at Villa and they had some great players, Mortimer, Cowans and Withe are just three that spring to mind, culminating in winning the proper European Cup in the season he left.
He never went back to Villa Park until Deadly sold up and was invited back by the then owner Randy Learner.
RIP Ron

Mrs MIAS and I were just talking about Ron. Everyone knew who he was. He was a top class manager in the days before we had to import them.

I remember him at Birmingham- signed some good players on the cheap and was not far off having a good side but for lack of money apparently suffered from dementia in his last yearsđ

I always admired him - a straight talking, no nonsense kind of guy who wasnât scared of anyone and built an extremely good team at Villa. I remember about 20 years ago someone phoned into a radio show to say that when Saunders was manager of Birmingham City and werenât doing very well, heâd written in to the club and expressed his dissatisfaction with the way things were going. To his surprise he got a phone call from someone asking if heâd like to come in and get a tour of the ground and meet the manager face to face? He obviously accepted and was surprised when he turned up to be immediately met by Saunders. He virtually pushed him into his office....and locked the door behind him. He then held up the offending letter and proceeded to tear a strip off the bloke before unlocking the door and telling him in no uncertain terms to get out. After that, the guy was a big fan of Saunders and I must say I think we need more managers like that rather than the carefully stage-managed PR we generally get these days.
RIP.
