He did loads of Shakespeare stuff for the BBC RIP JM. I remember watching loads of them circa 1980. They were the best ever versions. They were on Sunday nights on BBC 1.

I've only heard of the guy through what I have read in print through various books of Alan Bennett.
He certainly had a good varied life.

John Cleese I seem to remember and Benny from 'Crossroads' was another. Been 40 years since I saw them.

I know who he is and his background but I think the only thing of he's I've seen is his 1966 adaptation of "Alice In Wonderland" for the BBC. It's different and interesting.

In the 70s he was often on TV talking about the arts. Just watched an Arena special on him on BBC4, wasn't advertised or anything so I missed some of it, he was a neurologist, a star of the stage, writer, artist, theatre and opera director, TV writer and presenter and was apparently brilliant at them all. Lived a life of the mind. I bet from time to time he secretly wished he had wasted a bit of time watching classic TV shows though! Rest in peace.

A formidable intellectual presence - when he died they played a segment of him talking about being something of a polymath. Quite inspiring stuff, he didn't think there was anything special about being interested in lots of things and loathed being referred to as a "renaissance man".
As JJ says he very much lived a life of the mind, and a sad irony indeed that such a man should be afflicted by dementia in his latter years.
