A shame. Very likeable presenter and a good chef. Had FIVE Michelin stars, but you Never heard him bang on about them! Never up himself like others who came to the fore in later years, no drama-queen tantrums for the cameras either. I have some of his books, no-nonsense and direct, nothing poncey.
RIP Chef

That was a shock to hear. He seemed to have slipped of the radar with his TV and worked more on his restaurants.
I remember a guy I worked with years ago who wanted to base his career on Gary Rhodes and even went as far as having the same hair style.
5 Michelin stars is some going.
RIP Gary

RIP Gary That's the trouble, seasoned and respected chefs get moved on for the new wave of TV friendly chefs. We've lost some fantastic TV chefs over the years for pretty two-bob cooks, most not fit to face Gary's boots! He'd wipe the floor with them.

Was very surprised to hear this today, what a shame.
I've got to be honest, with his looks and his 'chirpy chappy' persona, which I liked, I never had him down as a Michelin accredited Chef. To my ignorance, I had him more in the company of Jamie Oliver who was in the right place at the right time and was lucky to get into TV so I understand (and good luck to him, he's done well).
Said on the radio that 5 Michelin stars was a record so I presume no other Chef has achieved this. Apparently he passed away in Dubai where he was working at the Royal Hotel.
Very,very sad. RIP.

It was a shock to me Gary had FIVE converted Michelin stars. Of course, he didn't brag or boast. If you're class, there's no need too.

Famous for his cooking skills and ability to create a range of delicious cuisine before viewers' very eyes, Gary achieved the prestigious Head Chef position at the Castle Hotel in Taunton.
He even retained the hotel's Michelin star at just 26 years of age.
Kit Chapman MBE, owner of the Castle Hotel, paid tribute to the talented chef, taking to Twitter to write: "It is with a profound sense of loss that I hear the sad news of the death of Gary Rhodes.
"In the late ‘80s he made @castletaunton famous by reviving the fortunes of the English culinary repertoire. A truly Great British Chef is gone. Deepest condolences to Jennie and the family."

When I lived in Dubai, one of Gary Rhodes’ restaurants was in the VIP cinema at Mall of the Emirates. It was close to my flat. I went to the VIP cinema twice for the experience. It’s a real extravagance at £25-£30 to watch a film. There’s only 12 seats in there, bed like seats, blankets, waiters on call. I’m not joking. There were no kids allowed either. The restaurant ‘in the cinema’ was even more of an extravagance. I didn’t eat there. There were so many good restos in Dubai at half the price of Gary Rhodes. And if I ate a decent slap up before watching a film, I’d probably end up snoring through the entire movie. One shouldn’t speak ill of the dead. But I always felt Gary Rhodes went to Dubai - just like Gordon Ramsey and others - to extend their name brand to large numbers of people who have more money than common sense. Dubai is possibly the worst place in the world for this. I went to some restaurants where the cheapest bottle of ‘house wine’ was £50/£60 on the drinks list. If you live in the wine growing region of Austria , would you seriously pay that amount for a bottle of Blaufrankisch with a meal?! Such extravagance was completely wasted on me too. I’d just end up paying £10 for a pint. That’s Dubai. It’s a rip off. One hidden gem of the Middle East is that you can also find superb Indian, Lebanese and Vietnamese restaurants at very cheap prices. The UAE and Kuwait are cosmopolitan societies where TV celebrity chefs were beaten to it decades ago. They were beaten there by ordinary folk who don’t have their head in the clouds. I really had no interest in dining at ‘Theatre by Rhodes’. I had too much common sense. uae.voxcinemas.com/ways-to-watch/theatre-by-rhodesThe prices may seem ordinary enough on the menu. But remember! You’ve already paid £25-£30 to get into the cinema beforehand.

This has jogged my memory (I think), didn't Keith Floyd base one of his early programmes on Gary Rhodes, quite possibly while he was at Taunton and comment on how good an upcoming talent he was?

Such a shame. I found out just before leaving work. He sounds like someone who loved cooking and had a genuine passion for it like Keith Floyd.
I remember in the late '90s he presented an edition of this and talked about Duran Duran. RIP Gary.

He was one of the first of the new wave of "celebrity chefs" in the late 80s. I remember watching him on Hot Chefs in the daytime. He made some wonderful cooking shows, and was a great chef. RIP.

This was such a shock. His wife released a statement in an attempt to stop speculation of the cause and said that he had died from a bleed on the brain.
