Anyone know the name of the bit part actor who plays the linesman in the rugby game - posh with glasses who gets narky with Terry. I don’t know the guys name but I think he used to appear in Dick Emery, normally as the interviewer on the street who slipped double entendres in and then was shoved over after being told ‘Oh you are awful, but I like you’ by the blonde female character and was asked ‘Are you married?’ the frustrated spinster. As for the episode I marked it average as I though it just meandered although had some classic moments with the rugby pitch and the chef who was full of his own importance. The ‘Modelle’ was so overacted it just seemed weird.

Possibly an unpopular opinion but thought this was, at best, average. Love Brian Glover but not much of a plot with the only highlight being the 'I used to play for the All Browns' line.

Each to their own efc and I'll agree the plot is thin enough, plus there's no sub plot going on in the background BUT. This has to be considered a little different and taken a little differently as it's way more farcical and comedy based than what we usually get from this era of Minder. There are loads of laughs and cracking scenes in this one which make it very good, albeit different imo.

Anyone know the name of the bit part actor who plays the linesman in the rugby game - posh with glasses who gets narky with Terry. This may well have been answered during the past 5 years on the forum....but if not, I think it's Peter Greene, who's sadly no longer with us. I recalled Peter as a boffin-type demonstrating gadgets in a Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em episode, which was repeated regularly (or seemed to be) back in the day. I was searching IMDb for the episode when I remembered his surname was Greene. Looking at Peter's IMDb credits, he appeared in Are You Being Served and I have that series on DVD. Peter's role in AYBS was very similar to that in Some Mothers and he did look as if he'd have been very much at home in a lab or a classroom. Although Peter only appears in a scene lasting seconds in Minder, it shows the importance of good casting in the most minor roles, with the nerdy and officious but believable teacher remonstrating with Arthur's attempted interference in the match. Even if Arthur's response had been inferior to the "All Browns" line, it would still have been a memorable scene which increased the hilarity in this episode. I'm a fan of The Beer Hunter and any plot holes are more than compensated for by the humour, which is constant: Arthur and Yorkie singing (George again showing his expert drunk playing), Georgina Hale only doing it for her plant money, the chef, Yorkie's syrup, Arthur squaring up to the young bloke, etc. I wonder how many guests from Yorkie's hotel ended up with food poisoning, given the state of the chef's uniform, even if his hat did stand up, p--- proud. What a grubby geezer though, eating with his hands from the world's greasiest fry-up. You can be sure that happens in some hotel kitchens. In an interview shortly after Minder began, George Cole said he wished he could be a more active father for his youngest son, however George's running on the rugby pitch isn't bad for a bloke of 55 or so. Gareth Edwards. Jimmy Edwards! Another good line is when the cheeky kid calls Arthur a narky old barsteward and Arthur asks that there's not so much of the old. One of these days I'll get to say someone's snapdragon is caning the motorway, but why didn't Terry join in the good old song and dance at the end.

I only rated this one as 'average' and in my opinion was not up to Minder's usual standards. Sure, it had its moments (my favourite being Arthur's claim to do 'King Fu'), but I felt that there was no real discernible plot for the actors to get into, which given the talent on offer is a shame. It's a personal thing, but I don't like seeing others drunk (although it's OK when I am!), so I was impatient for the early scene in the restaurant to end so that the proper story could start (I was disappointed there as well). I found the affectedness of Renee annoying and the plausibility of a hooker entertaining her client at home just because he'd lost his trousers rather thin.
Don't get me wrong - the episode still knocks the pants off today's woke entertainment, but I feel that this doesn't quite reach the same heights as others.

I think that's a bit harsh considering that you've got 3 actors (GC, DW and BG) at the top of their game. And, if you're of a certain age the Yorkshire Traction coach driver seemed to be so typical of the time. I think Terry's exasperated reaction at the end speaks for every designated driver before and since.

In theory there wasn't much going on in this episode and it didnt make sense to me thay Arthur would spend so much time on something thay wasnt a nice little earner. In these first 2 seasons hes shown to be quite mean in some ways .But its in my viewing history one of the first episodes where the all out comedy magic with none of the grittiness was on full display. Also some nice little mini scenes like the copper waking Tel up. The chef and the overall wonderful 1980 atmosphere where it still felt very much like the 70's.It ended up being a real treat for me and not just cos I hadnt seen it before. Really liked the part time model character and her funny voice,Brian Glover was restrained by his standards which I liked as he can in my eyes be OTT.It was so funny seeing Arthur the confident hardman. The incut language ws also music to my ears I came here on these pages not sure if others would have rated it an excellent like me and am very happy they did.

Quite enjoyed this one though nothing much really happens. As has been mentioned, the main plotline seems to be man gets pissed and loses his trousers. I mean, that's basically Twelfth Night. However Brian Glover is always good value, especially when destroying wendy houses.

This comes across as more of a Ray Daley episode, then a Terry one.
Arthur wanting to have a punch up with the groom and grabbing the rugby ball during the match is very out of character.
Arthur doing the crossword is very reflective of George Cole's own passion for the the puzzle and makes me wonder if this scene was suggested by GC himself? I think this was the first episode which strayed from the original format of Arthur being the co star....

Out of character yes i agree but i think it's a good departure from the usual Arthur and a good comical touch. Other examples can be seen in 'In' when Arthur gets tough with Ferret in the Police cell, "Don't mess with me Ferret! Oh sorry Billy!" and 'Sorry Pal Wrong Number' when Rat and co are playing up - "I'll 'ave him!"

Never a real fan of this episode, partly due to Brian Glover's overacting, which somehow doesn't work for me - although I think his portrayal of Billy Casper's brutal PE teacher in Kes is absolutely brilliant.

As I said before, the actual plot, An old mate of Arthur's trying, who has lost his trousers and gone AWOL is more like a series ten ray Daley episode, but the acting by GC and DW make it work...

I've always enjoyed this episode. Terry trying to sort out the confusion about the hotel porter, and the rugby game are very well observed.

Arthur giving orders from his bed whilst 'er indoors does the hoovering and then struggling to watch Terry eat his sandwich in the Winch' are points worth mentioning too as is the football hitting Arthurs car window and the ensuing banter. I'm with jj on this, i think there's a lot to like in this one.

Hello Everyone, my name is Barnaby and I am new to this site. I thought I would point out another Blooper in the episode 'The Beer Hunter'; When Terry is waiting to drive Arthur home at the beginning of the episode, he is sitting in Arthurs Jag. When he drives Arthur and Yorkie back to his hotel, he is actually driving his Ford Capri, then the shot of Arthur and Yorkie in the back seat is of them sitting in the Jag.

Great episode this. Georgina Hale stealing every scene she's in as usual. And as for the chef
Edit - just got to the rugby scene. Classic GC facial expression. Yes Harry. I just watched this episode again and Hale is superb. It’s hard to steal scenes off Glover but somehow she manages it.

Possibly the best ever guest star appearance by the great Brian Glover?

Possibly the best ever guest star appearance by the great Brian Glover? He’s good, but there’s better, self inflicted Sid for starters.
