Wow, this is a shock.
I won't get political on here, but his recent comments in the press about the state of the NHS (and a certain health secretary who subsequently wanted support when he made it a public spat - Hawking was so well respected there would only be 1 winner) made me respect this guy even more for 'standing up'.
RIP Mr Hawking

For a man who was told at 22 years of age that he only had a few years to live when diagnosed with MND and stretch it out to an additional 54 years, that is an achievement in itself.
To have the life he did and achieve what he did in physics was just phenomenal.
RIP

No doubt a huge influence on our understanding of the science of the universe. He did well to get to 76 considering the docs originally said he wouldnt see 30. I remember a few years ago when his wife called the police on him during a domestic and I felt he was one of the lads when I read that.
I did once wonder if he just googled everything on that computer he had infront of him and pretended he knew stuff, but I actually think he really knew loads of stuff about complicated things I don't understand. I'd trust him over Brian Cox any day.

Back in 1996 I stayed with a couple of college friends for a few days in Cambridge. The house - which actually belonged to a brother in law or something - was impressive to say the least! What was perhaps more impressive was that Stephen Hawking lived next door. I kid you not. I actually saw him in his wheelchair (with his entourage) coming towards me as I was walking across (I think) Coe Fen.
