Martin Landau passed away today at the age of 89. He starred in the the first three years of Mission:Impossible as well as playing Commander Koenig in SPACE: 1999. He also had numerous appearances in movies and various tv shows. A solid actor in character roles and as a leading man. He won a well deserved Academy Award for his brilliant portrayal of Bela Lugosi in the movie Ed Wood.
Rest In Peace Mr. Landau. Thanks for all the entertainment.

Saturday mornings for me growing up were all about Space 1999, so he'll always be Commander John Koenig, drifting through the cosmos... RIP Martin

WHAT?!! Jeez, I am gutted to hear this. Rollin Hand and John Koening - two of the most iconic TV characters of the last 50 years. Martin was also very complimentary of a certain George Cole in the past too. Seemed like a lovely bloke and plenty of convention photos (just on this forum) certainly show he wasn't one to shy away from fans. What a great bloke. Very sad to hear this. RIP Commander Koenig

Very sad, a good actor. Loved him in Ed Wood. 89 is a good innings. RIP Martin

What a shame. A brilliant actor who I had the pleasure of meeting 5 years ago. He was spot on as Rollin Hand and in North By Northwest. Here's one of the photos I took of him on the fan-built Space: 1999 set with homemade Commlock: RIP.

I shall be watching an episode or two of SPACE: 1999 later tonight. I'm about two thirds of the way through my newly acquired blu-ray set of Year 2. OK, not as good as Year 1, but Martin Landau is still good.
GREAT PICTURE.

And I intend to watch Alone in the Dark (1982) in the next few days to pay tribute. A cult classic slasher, with an all star cast of actors (Landau on amusingly goofy top form!), some of whom play escaped loonies that take it on themselves to avenge the murder of their favourite doctor at the clinic (he's not really been murdered, he's just gone on holiday for a couple of weeks.. ) who they are convinced has been done in by his replacement. Landau plays 'Preacher'. A homicidal, pyromaniac, bible-basher. In this clip he takes a fancy to some poor mail man's hat.. Such a cool film. RIP Martin. Thanks for the entertainment.

Thanks Arch for the info on Alone In The Dark. I thought it was just alternate title for the other movie Landau was in with Palance. The title escapes me.

Was only posting about him the other day as well, in the Sidney Poitier follow up film.

Thanks Arch for the info on Alone In The Dark. I thought it was just alternate title for the other movie Landau was in with Palance. The title escapes me. It's well good. If you haven't seen Alone in the Dark ('82) seek it out. Over the years it's never got the respect it deserves.. It never had the gorespill or titillation to shock/excite fans of the genre at the time so was overlooked in favour of much worse movies, but in retrospect many horror fans have (dare I say it) grown up a bit and come to highly rate it. Personally, I was always a big fan. Landau, Palance and Pleasence are ace in it. The minute you get actors of that calibre just going for it, you know you're gonna have a great time. It doesn't take itself seriously for one minute, and they ham it up with total gusto. Landau fans that haven't seen it are in for a treat.Normally slasher films have quite a limited appeal to certain viewers but Alone In The Dark is deserving of a much bigger audience. Ideal setting: Friday or Saturday night. Get some mates round, order a pizza or curry or summat, add a few beers. Relive your youth. Winner.

More sad news from the world of Cult TV. Even Game of Thrones has gone downhill. Episode 1, Season 7 and Ed Sheeran turns up. Is there no escaping him?
RIP Martin Landau.

I ended up watching 'The Rules of Luton' last night. Yes, the episode is as bad as the title suggests. However, despite all the running around, climbing up quarries and fighting monsters (all under the harsh and unrelenting summer of '76 sun!), Martin Landau gets some good moments, in particular one nice little bit where he is telling Maya about the World War ("The war to end all wars") of 1987 that wiped out most of the earth's population... including his wife. He's pretty good in this. Considering that I have been watching Year Two sporadically for about six months, it was a nice piece of synchronicity that this episode was next in order.
R I P Martin.
Which reminds me, 'The Purging of CI5' is the next episode in my equally sporadic watching of The Professionals MK111 DVD boxset...

This is spooky - some of you may have read my posts on Space 1999 and my love of the show, I was daydreaming yesterday about the (un)likelyhood of there ever being a revived version/remake and whether any of the original cast might feature in cameos and I had thought to myself that sadly Martin Landau was likely to have died before the project might ever begin.
He played the central role in my favourite childhood tv show and I shall always respect him for that. Perhaps its best to sum up his passing by recalling his conversation with Victor Bergman in Black Sun "To everything that might have been....To everything that was"
