Desmond Carrington, presenter of The Music Goes Round on BBC Radio 2 from 1981 till October last year. Not sure if there is anywhere left to hear such a variety of music or delivered in such a relaxed manner. Started his radio career in forces broadcasting. Also an actor best known for Emergency Ward 10.

Radio 2 were already doing a tribute show for him tonight. I didn't listen to him but he must have been an excellent broadcaster to be doing it for so long.
RIP

Must have loved his music to continue doing it until nearly 90.

Yes, in the mid 2000s when Radio Two became my routine listening, I inadvertently took a liking to Desmond Carrington's weekly show.
It was often on in the car at a time when I was journeying home from work. Or in the house just after I got in.
He played an eclectic mix of music from pre-war up to much more recent. And often linked seemingly disparate songs and artists, and told you things you didn't know. A relaxing education of music.
Later-generation DJs like Mark Radcliffe and Tony Blackburn were also heard to praise his show. IIRC it had been on Monday evenings but more recently moved to Friday 7pm, to tie in with 'Friday Night Is Music Night' (at 8pm). Tony Blackburn assumed the 7pm slot recently (albeit before Desmond's death) and is making it a good show in his own style.
RIP Desmond Carrington.

I used to like the way he pretended to put the cat out at the end of the show. Very much a trademark. R4 had a nice tribute to him this evening on their weekly omnibus programme.

In the same period, I also inadvertently became a fan of Sir Humphrey Littleton's jazz show - it was on in the same timeslot as Desmond Carrington's, but IIRC the following evening. Such shows were/are good because they concentrate on the music, and allow the listener space to make up his/her own mind about what they are listening to. Brian Mathew on 'Sounds Of The Sixties' was similar - yet we have even lost him from the airwaves recently. To be fair, at the age of 88 this was imminent, but they have moved the said show (with the Smashie n Nicie style of Tony Blackburn) to an obscure time slot (6am-8am), and will put Dermot O'Leary on 8-10am Sats with a current show 'advising us on what films we should watch etc'.... Sorry to on in an obituary thread, but around 3-4 years ago Radio Two began to be truly awful and I avoid listening for the most part. Tony Blackburn is one of the few good voices on there, and even he has had a rough ride from the procedural management in recent months.
