Now when I was a lad, there were only 2 World of Sport wrestlers that everyone talked about - these two... ...but who was the coolest, Big Daddy or Giant Haystacks?

How this farce got shown on 'World of Sport' with Dickie Davies I shall never know. Its place should have been on 'World of Panto' presented by Danny la Rue. When you see the razzamatazz of the WWF (or WWE as its now called), you realise just how $hit British wrestling was. I HATE wrestling, but do admit watching Wrestlemania on cable in the U.S. in 1989, with a group of mates. Fantastic entertainment, really top drawer. Hulk Hogan v Macho Man Randy Savage. It was all staged and an act, but they knew how to put a show on. Best of all, NO Kent Walton mugging us off with his commentary.

I used to love it! Shirley Crabtree for me. My brother worked in a working mens club in Aberdeen back in the 80s and Haystacks walked in, sat down and broke the seat. My brother said he was huge, but stank really badly and drunk pints as though they were shots. He got through 6 chairs that night!

I love the fact Big Daddys act was based on having kids and grannies adoring him, and inside, he hated them!

My overriding memory of British wrestling from the 70s and 80s was the commentator Kent Walton. (Perhaps this could be a future death match: Commentators from years gone by)
Jacky Pallo was quite amusing: He had Shirley Temple hair and he made it fun. But it was all showmanship. No doubt it was physical but you see someone kissed on the head and he falls like being hit with a slab of concrete, something you know it isn't quite right.

Fair play, after a rubbish day in work, I am always guaranteed a giggle with such a classic turn of phrase! I must admit as a youngster when all this was going on (I was 6) this was very cool on Saturdays. However I seem to be in the opposite boat to ace5150 - when the US stuff came on I thought this was the biggest pile of wotsit I had ever seen. I really couldn't bear a single minute - the UK version was cheap, and looked cheap. The US version clearly had millions poured into but was just as shyte. Big Daddy for me - he was the good guy. There is a memory I have from childhood - apparently my Great Aunt owned a pub in South Wales. Rumour has it she once had a picture of a rugby team on the wall with a certain Shirley Crabtree in the picture. Apparently the story has it that Crabtree went oop north to play rugby league for the cash which was very frowned upon at the time. I have NO idea if this story is true or a complete myth! Btw, great story daz!

I quit watching completely after the Chris Benoit tragedy and haven't seen it since. It just showed how damaged those wrestlers could wind up being, it is so much more dangerous than what people think despite it being scripted. But, it really was lots of fun to watch.

PP - well, I was 6 at the time Big Daddy was the good guy fighting the forces of evil with his bumper gut machine. Possibly the only athlete (!) ever who did benefit from too many pints. Times were different then, Big Daddy was on Saturdays afternoon on 'World of Panto' and now its X-Factor auditons for 2 hours. However incredibly naff Big Daddy might seem now he is still a league above X-Factor for me. Intersting perhaps is that Haystacks snuffed if when he was just 52 back in 1998, while Daddy died when he was just 67. No age really by today's standards.

Have to say I preferred watching speedway bikes on a Saturday or Rally cross (with a younger Murray Walker commentating)than Wrestling. But we are scraping the bottom of a deep barrel with this subject.

Read that Giant Haystacks was a nice guy while Big Daddy was a real nasty piece of work.

My abiding memory of Mr Haystacks is seeing him make light work of some snot nosed reporter taking diabolical liberties whilst being interviewed. Reporter was looking for some cheap laughs. He got them alright.

Watching that clip above, which I'd never seen before, just made me realise how big haystacks was, he was massive

On one of the video clips I watched on this thread - I think it's the laughable bout between him and Big Daddy (kind of like watching It's A Knockout!) - I'm sure it says Giant Haystacks is 6'9" and 35stone... Whereas on the front of this record it says he's 6'11" and 42stone? What's the truth here?

I was trying to educate MIAS just the other day as to who Andre The Giant was.
I relayed some of Andre's drinking achievements to him, and even MIAS was seemed impressed!!
Andre's bar bill for his month working on The Princess Bride was allegedly just over $40,000.00! Andre once drank 16 bottles of wine in 4 hours before he went to wrestle in a 20 man battle royal. Andre once drank 119x12oz cans of beer in one 6 hour period. That's a can of beer every 3minutes, none stop for 6hours!!
That guy was a flippin legend!

From wiki:
On an episode of WWE's Legends of Wrestling, Mike Graham said André once drank 156 16-US-fluid-ounce (470 ml) beers in one sitting, which was confirmed by Dusty Rhodes.

It is! Even as a confirmed drunkard I would not consider attempting such an audacious and foolhardy feat of extreme intoxication. Hats off to Fordham.. The Silly bar steward. Impressive though nonetheless

I recall Australian batsman David Boon have an almighty bender flying over for an Ashes tour some 25 years ago. 52 cans in a one-er, FULL STRENGTH and not the weak stuff that tastes like yesterday's pi$$.
