This week is the battle of the British cheapy shops! Note that some of this week's options are regional so you might not know them even if you are based in the UK. Apologies to those outside the UK that might not know these at all. What is your favourite UK high street discount shop and why?July 2016 list taken from: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_discount_stores_in_the_United_Kingdom TWO VOTES!

I'm not familiar with them, but I voted Poundland since that is what my favorite YouTuber Ashens frequents.

Q. What about The Works? A. I must say I enjoy a stroll round there but it wouldn't be top of the list for me. Up in South Wales, B&M is more commonly known as 'The bum shop'. I like 'The Range' but voted Poundland and Pound World. I think these two set the benchmark for cheap'n'cheerful, though they are not entirely the CHEAPEST based on size. Example: I bought 4.7 DVD-R in Asda the other day which worked out at 14.9p per unit. In Poundland it is 20p per unit. I did get a USB mouse in Poundland for a quid for an old PC - this will be hard to beat new.

I wouldn't have had the range down as a cheap shop.
Home Bargains and BM for me. Boyes has a mention. Was in one of their stores in York 3 years ago and was like walking into a shop in the 80s, I quite liked that. A lot of the stores mentioned I have never heard of.

I buy the occasional item in Poundland so I voted for them.
I'm not sure I'd classify CEX as a discount store, they seem to knock out a lot of obsolete stuff at a substantial mark up. Yesterday's technology at tomorrow's prices. Rip off.

The Original Factory Shop is great. Not everything is a pound. Most of it isn't but there's bargains galore. Top brands at discount prices, anything from trainers to carpet cleaners to frying pans. They have branches all over the country. www.tofs.com/storelocator/lookup/

Yesterday's technology at tomorrow's prices. Rip off. I was very impressed when mias handed me a bunch of DVD media, all blank of course in a carry about wallet from the Land of Pound. I have still to plug in my Poundland USB mouse but will give it a whirl and report back here in due course. CEX - I agree about their prices ltd. They are top whack second hand prices at best. I haven't bought anything from them ever, but was thinking of a second hand smartphobe at one point. The trouble is, they are just too expensive and are essentially just a dressed up pawnbroker. I am not sure how well they are doing as everytime I'm in one, the pawning queue is humongous while those buying anything seem very few and far between.

B&M and Poundland. B&M have a good choice of food and toiletries. Poundland is less good in this respect, but has CDs for £1. you can pick up real bargains of music that you didn't get around to buying at the time. Honorary mention for the regional retailer Boyes. They are like a more traditional shop, the kind we miss now Woolworth's has gone. I like to buy paint & DIY goods from them if possible, though their range doesn't seem to be as good as it once was. I prefer Boyes to their comparator store Wilkinsons. I have known the latter to confuse with 'special offers', e.g. such offers are only valid if you have already spent a certain amount, although this is not obvious at first. I just find Boyes more straightforward and honest.

Rule Britannia - I am pleased to announce that the Poundland USB mouse is an absolute hit and works a treat. Very nice to use too. An absolute bargain compared to these off the shelf mouse options here in Austria today, nothing under €9.99 ... Also, CD/DVD wallet for a quid in Poundland (brother mias is well familiar), off the shelf in Austria today, found nothing under €7.99 ... Nice little earner here for anyone who is thinking of E(uro)-baying!

Defunct Poundworld is back (sort of) - now trading as 'One Below' www.one-below.co.uk/After searching high and low for a cheap one I found a 5m CAT5 network cable there today for a quid. I don't think anyone will be able to beat that price new.

Something replaced the Aberdeen Union Street shop, but I don't think it is called one-below, but they have some cracking bargains to be found, although not a poundshop as such.
Not that I ever look for bargains you understand.

I went for B&M and Poundland. N Ireland doesn’t have many of the shops listed.
Occasionally, I pop into B&M as they might sell Sheba cat food cheaper than Pets At Home or Tesco. My cat is fussy and only eats this brand. He’s gone off Felix and now demands Sheba in gravy while other waifs and strays starve to death on the streets.
There is a Poundland in Coleraine too. When I worked in the town centre, I used to get the Chicken and Cheese wraps in there for £1 when I forgot my lunch. But I usually avoid the place, only popping in when our industrious leader is here visiting. I guess it’s quite good for things like shaving cream, toiletries and Snickers multi-packs. But I guess you get these anyway when you’re doing your shopping.

I voted Home Bargains and Poundland.
Poundland has lots of good stuff for home DIY. 5 tubes of (very good) superglue for a quid, tubs of ready to use filler - £1, pack of three craft knives - £1 etc.

Since this poll started, on the European mainland we now have the 'Action' shop, which fellow forum member Terry told me are Dutch. Seen in Germany and Austria, this is the closest to 'Poundland' I have seen in Austria: www.action.com/Check 'em out if you're on the continent this summer. They are all over the EU. They also sell superglue, filler and bottled soft drinks cheaper than anyone else.

I think we may have been in an action in Holland a few weeks back, their drinks were far cheaper than most other places and we picked up a few other things.

I chose B&M and Poundland on this thread back in 2016.
If I had to choose again now I would still pick B&M, but my second choice would now be between Home Bargains, Boyes and Bargain Buys.

Home Bargains is legend in our house ... I bought the squirty Sudafed there for £2.59 last week. They also do my only alcoholic tipple, Manns Brown Ale for 89p a bottle, 89 pence I tell you! I usually take 5 bottles of this to Austria to celebrate special occasions throughout the year (Arch getting a round in, reading that daz has splashed out, you know the sort of thing) I was also in The Range this week, they are pretty cheap and do a lot of paint and tools etc. As some of these shops no longer exist it might be worth doing a "death rematch" with updated info/stores at a later point.

Never been in any of them. I hear that a favourite pastime for some people is going into Poundland, picking something up, going over to a member of staff and saying "How much is this?" Ho, ho!!!

I voted for Boyes and Poundland. I love Boyes (I worked there 3 addresses ago) and go into Poundland every week, I have nearly an hour wait for a bus home after Slimming World and never realised I needed so much stuff... I am so rock and roll

Boyes is always worth a look-in; a traditional, unpretentious household/hardware store.
I often try Boyes first before e.g. Wilco or B&M, though I am not sure that their range is as good or competitively-priced as it once was. Though they did move into bigger premises in my town centre, when Argos vacated for the retail park.
I believe they are mostly in Yorkshire/north east England - it is unfortunate that the rest of the UK doesn't have Boyes stores.
