Budgie for me. Saw them a few times as a support act, always value for money. Powerful trio, and with a guitarist named Big John Thomas......you won't beat that! Saw Manics in 1993 WITH Richey. They were poor.

Manics for me as they have the most songs I like ... including From Despair To Where, Motorcycle Emptiness, Australia, Kevin Carter, If You Tolerate This, Everything Must Go, Autumn Song plus selected Holy Bible tracks too. Admittedly they have a lot of stinkers too but on the whole they win it for me. Richey was never very good on the guitar and if I'm honest I think JDB is the Manics really with others making up the numbers. Born in a place where there are pretty decent townsfolk too. I love the sound that Bullet For My Valentine have but obviously less commercial but a must if you like Iron Maiden. I really should listen to more of them. If it was based solely on lyrics it would be Goldie Lookin Chain. I knew stacks of Newport folks like this back in the day who incredibly talk exactly like GLC in this dodgy Newport towny slang.

The Furry Animals, just pipping the Manics for me, a Rizla paper between them though.
Teenage daz was a big Alarm fan back in the 80s, before I discovered electronic music, not sure if it's OK to admit that or not.

Myself and ace5150 (fellow brethren guitar player who I'll rope in here) have both said, Nicky is no bass player, very run of the mill. Granted, he may write the lyrics but live he's a nothing in my opinion. I've seen the Manics live several times and it's 90% JDB, 9% Sean and 1% Wire who dresses up to look cool and plays pretty much single notes for the whole evening. Anyone who has played bass for a month could do what he does I reckon.

As much as I like JDB, Nicky is by far my favourite manic, but we'll have to agree to disagree on this one. Neither Richie or Nicky would have claimed to be musicians, but take them both out of the equation and you don't have the manics.

Neither Richie or Nicky would have claimed to be musicians, but take them both out of the equation and you don't have the manics. I don't dispute that ... he's an essential part of the creative process, just as a musician he's not the sharpest player out there. He hits the notes but you don't see much in terms of runs or scales. So I think we can agree on this. Nicky's older brother Patrick Jones is a poet and I've read stories that he is 'the biggest influence' on the band's lyrics. I feel that had it not been for Wire nobody would've heard of his brother, who certainly milks it a little by having his famous brother mentioned everytime he has something to say in the paper. I don't know that many other modern 'famous poets' and have only really heard of Patrick Jones as he gets himself in the press, 9 times out of 10 his name preceded by 'Manics Nicky Wire's older brother...'

Super Furry animals for me. Not over keen on their music but love the name.
Really like The Alarm too.
Stereophonics and Manics were always patchy for my taste. "A Thousand Trees" is a superb track from their first album 'Word Gets Around'. Their subsequent albums became too commercial.

I voted for the Alarm. Stupid hairdos, but a great rock anthem sound.

To be honest, the only one I really know any songs of are stereophonics, and have some of their stuff. Some of the others I've heard of but couldn't really think of a song from them unfortunately. That said, my music tastes are very manic, from rat pack stuff to Garbage (not rubbish, a band called Garbage, just to clarify, and my all time favourite ........ BRITNEY!! Don't hate me cos I have a teenage girl side

I went for Super Furry Animals - bought several of their albums at the time, and I especially liked them when they emerged amidst Britpop.
Looking at that list, I think there are many good Welsh bands, and I also acknowledge The Alarm, Amen Corner, Badfinger, Catatonia, Gorky's Zycotic Mynci, The Manics, Stereophonics.

What? No Darling Buds. Easily one of the best Welsh bands! I even know of the Darling Buds, but sadly don't know any acts on this list other than The Alarm!

Incredible how so many great bands just don't make it across the pond. You should definitely check some of these out mybodyguard - Manic Street Preachers would be my choice.

I'm American and the only group on the list I know is Bad Finger. I am a fan but didn't know they were Welsh.

The Manics are the best Welsh band by a mile. Good players (except Nicky Wire) and great lyrics thanks to Nicky and Richey.
I have a mate from Brum who says Budgie were the best band he'd ever seen live. I'm still exploring their back catalogue.
And as for the Darling Buds, I saw them in Cwmbran in 1991. Can't say I remember much about them apart from the lead singer who was, as we say in Welsh, 'eitha pishin'.

Not a Welsh band (there is a Welsh flag in the video though), but after watching this video for the first time last week I have a feeling this may have been our jno back in 89...

Badfinger were brilliant, but such a sad outcome.
The early Manics were absolutely amazing; when there was still four of them; and before stadium rock beckoned. This was when there seemed to be a general move away from punky/indie/guitar bands; raves, acieed, madchester, and shyte like the Stereo MCs were the order of the day, so to a punky indie kid, they were a breath of fresh air. The local free newspaper declared they were 'The New Sex Pistols' (this was when any vaguely punky band that no-one had heard of was called this) then later-on, ofcourse there was the '4Real' thing.
I saw them many times, circa 1990/1991, in very small venues, and they were brilliant, the gigs were often chaos, with sound problems, power failures, punchups, and all sorts. At a few gigs, two girls were selling fanzines; it was called 'Last Exit' and the two girls later became 'Shampoo'. At another gig (possibly the Marquee) they were giving all the girls make-up compaq thingys; it said 'Manic Street Preachers' on the mirror in the old-style Manics lipstick logo. There was quite a movement, as you went to different gigs, you would talk to to people who would travel the length and breadth of the country seeing the Manics.
This was long before generation Terrorists was released (which I was very disappointed with, it sounded very commercial, and not very punky, with most of my favourites missing)
This is how I remember them (I was there)

Great post billymedhurst!
These early Manics certainly had a lot of energy about them and I always thought at the beginning they had a touch of the eccentric Guns'n'Roses about them. JDB is no Axl Rose and certainly they didn't have the commercial element at all but from the look there was definitely some 1986 inspired Guns'n'Roses in this sort of performance. This was far more punky though. I know they covered Guns'n'Roses' 'It's So Easy' which must have been one of the first bands to have covered a G'n'R track and released it.
Wikipedia has 'You Love Us' as Glam-Metal which I think is a fair assessment of the stuff they were outputting in this period.

Can't say I remember much about them apart from the lead singer who was, as we say in Welsh, 'eitha pishin'. What's 'eitha pishin' mean in Welsh? Wait let me guess... Is it: Dressed as a cowboy in @ssless chaps? Or how about... Chain smoking Sobranies? Up the duff? A sore loser? Holding the audience hostage? Away with the faeries? Missing due to having a bad head cold? Singing all the songs in Romanian? Up their own @rse? Playing the famous Welsh game 'Shove Ha'penny'? Arrested for vagrancy? Writing pointless, self indulgent lists of bullsh!t in a vain attempt to amuse himself whilst laid in bed with a hangover, before he rings for his butler Tonkin and orders breakfast in bed? Are any of those guesses close? I think one in particular may have been on the money.. If I'm not right with any of the above, I can probably use my imagination to think of more potential meanings for eitha pishin..? As a none Welsh speaker I could always look it up by skating the interweb, but I like guessing games.

Her dance moves are terrible though but I noticed that in the other video jno posted up.. Awful! Also I didn't like the directing of either video. They made me feel a bit seasick. Plus I don't really like their music much, it's too 'teeny' and 'poppy' for me. I've not been able to watch either video of theirs posted up on here for more than say, 1 minute. Even without the nausea inducing videos I don't think I could face a concert of theirs, even if it was held in The Bristol Bierkeller and they had a fit singer.
