The Country 'Woody Guthrie', immense artist who wrote songs people related to from hardship, poverty and injustice. Get past the Country & Western tag and check him out. I think Oz name checked him in Auf Weidersehen, pet. Sleep now Merle, your work is done.

So sad, and on his birthday too. I love his cover of Pancho and Lefty with Willie Nelson. It is beautiful.

Oz was indeed a great fan of Merle. In S2 he carried a photo of the two them taken in Nashville.

Whenever I saw a Merle Haggard cd or record,I always used to see if I can't Be Myself was on it.It's the only thing I ever liked sung by Jimmy Nail. Finally got to hear Merle singing it of course, with the advent of the internet.

I remember watching an interesting documentary of him a few years back on BBC4: Merle Haggard: Learning to Live with Myself.
