Totally scraping the barrel this week...
Due to the unpopularity of Joe Dolce over on the Top Of The Pops thread recently, I thought it would be interesting to put him up against the people's favourite Manuel (from Fawlty Towers) to determine ...
Which is the WORST version of 'Shaddap You Face'? (and thus, hopefully find SOMETHING positive about this condemned 1981 song)
So which is WORST?
(1) Joe Dolce
Number 1 in Australia, France, Germany, Italy and the UK. Number 2 in Canada.
(2) Manuel
'In character' Andrew Sachs milking his cash cow to the n-th level, blatantly profiteering off the back of 12 episodes in Fawlty Towers. This record (apparently) made it to 138 in the UK charts and is as rare as rocking horse wotsit, which is arguably of better quality too.
Which (if any) is the worst? I shall assume uploading of B-sides will not in any way help influence this week's decision.

Both sides of this single together with this earlier unknown 'O Cheryl' single released by Manuel in 1979, Sachs has 4 tracks he could put on a possible album!

Sorry jno, this is clearly the worst 'death match' of all. As regards the two tracks... where's the wheelie bin?

Even I voted for the last option! Meanwhile Sachs is supposed to have told Cleese to keep in the 'Is this a piece of your brain?' after he wanted it out. Far better than a single note on this thread.

Both versions completely run their course before two minutes is up. Why 3 minutes long? One entire minute of audience participation. A memorable song but weak in craft. I'm not sure how to vote... Yet!

Embarrassing thread.

I voted Manuel. I think I must be missing something, though, because it seems like a harmless enough cutsie novelty song either way. Is this all down to Vienna?

For whom? See we could be debating politics or wondering about numbers of national insurance numbers out there, or perhaps be doing who is 'the wurst' (the biggest sausage) .. David Cameron or the EU, but as always this forum is discussing the undiscussable - taking a lighter look at the world wondering how people manage to stay alive making a living from spouting nonsense on vinyl. The popularity of Sachs as Manuel, you'd have thought he might have made it to the top 40?! As for Dolce, just HOW did he get away with this "Mr Blobby" equivalent in 1981 suckering the public in with TOTAL pathetic sausage quality material? I had just turned 7, my mum physically handed over the readies so can I be excused from lining Dolce's pockets with gold?!

The popularity of Sachs, you'd have thought he might have made it to the top 40?! Why? Other than Fawlty Towers, name another noteworthy role? his son, I believe, Andrew opps John I mean, was a long-term DJ on Capital Radio during the 80s and early 90s. It's amazing how many successful programme/character gets missed by other comedies/dramas. The same could said about Tony Robinson. Brilliant as Baldrick, but other than 'Time Team', I can't think of another programme, without looking on Google.

Well, 'at the time' I assume Fawlty Towers was riding high in the popularity psyche ... On DVD features Prunella Scales mentions that 'at the time' Cleese and Booth were under massive pressure to do more plus Sachs mentions he was asked to do 'Manual-type' a lot immediately afterwards. Scales says she admired Cleese/Booth saying 'no' to more. Clearly too many one orf roles believe they can get a free hit record out of it. Sachs is possibly milking his as much as Adam West in the 70s, here he is signing a book ... as you guessed it, ...

Problem is these wonderful characters become such a stereotype, people demand a reprise. More often than not Manual lives within our psychy... Andrew Sachs gets overlooked.

hmmm both pretty bad for sure, but as I can't say I've seen Andrew Sachs in anything else I can remember, his version edges it as I'd expect no less, I am going to vote for Joe.

Apologies, its a GREAT thread, just that this particular 'death match' was a poor one. Even the ones I don't vote on were worth debating over.

Perhaps the more appropriate question this week (which has come out of this) might have been whether or not Andrew Sachs has been cashing in on Manuel for far too long?

Perhaps the more appropriate question this week (which has come out of this) might have been whether or not Andrew Sachs has been cashing in on Manuel for far too long? Let's have it right, he's certainly dining out on Russell Brand sorting his grand daughter out for today's generation who don't know or care about Manuel.

The Sachs version. I don't like neither, but Dolce probably never had to work again after penning that cr*p, so fair play to the guy.
Andrew Sachs appeared in a Ray Daley Minder episode and also got a role in Corrie, but I think that may have been as a result of the the Brand and Ross affair and how can anyone not remember 'Tales From Fat Tulips Garden' with Tony Robinson from back in the 80s?

Re: Tony Robinson. I remember the title. Never saw it. He was also in that Maid Marion thing as The Sheriff of Nottingham weren't he? Before Time Team, the best kids TV thing he did though was the Greek myths and legends thingy.... I don't know it's title but it covered The Trojan War, Odysseus and Theseus. He walked about and retold the stories, a bit like Jackanory.

I actually KNOW that other "If you want to be happy" song from being here for so long, I haven't heard it for ages and I had no idea it was Joe Dolce doing a cover. I must have heard it at a party or some local "festl" over the years. Major shy*e overload.

It's a triumphant cackfest. However, I would appreciate your comments on comparing it to this number 61 (1 week on the chart) UK hit by complete nobodies Frank K and Wiston Office called 'Everybody Let's Somebody Love' from 1991, which also featured an element of Italy/US in the fact they were a duo from those two countries (hence I posted this here, don't ask me HOW I know this useless info). To be honest my feeling is the so-called 'hit' below is far worse than Dolce's efforts so even though Dolce is really really p**s poor, in the spirit of 'let's find something positive about Joe Dolce', is he actually better than this sort of Italian/US music? Now I bet you listened to the WHOLE of Dolce's Austrian hit and turned this nonsense off within about 30 seconds? Why? Do you prefer Joe Dolce?

Changing my vote on this one, the Joe Dolce version came on youtube randomly at the weekend and my daughter then played it about 10 times, rather enjoyed it, listening back to these, the Andrew Sachs version is by far worse and now gets my vote.
