Suggested by: another threadTime to cast your votes for 60s songwriters this week. This isn't 'who is the best band' but simply who do you think was the most talented songwriter or songwriters. Let's keep this one friendly of course.

L&M by some distance - only Dylan comes close.

Since Lennon & McCartney will probably romp this one I will go with Ray Davies. I posted on another thread a while back that I believe he is probably one of the most underrated songwriters ever, probably not helped by the strong competition back in the 60s.
Like MIAS above I like all three groups and own most of their albums, but just a little something extra for me with The Kinks/Ray Davies.

Love all three but in terms of sheer quality in quantity that appeals to so many people in so many ways in so many places, I had to go with L&M.

Townshend for me. Set in the 60s (can I get away with that?) some of the tracks from Quadrophenia are nothing short of excellent.

Im surprised at the obvious omissions of Jagger/Richard, and more obvious, Brian Wilson. I plumped for Ray Davies, his writing is sublime

Ray Davies for me. His writing just has that extra charm.

It is close but Davies pips that lot (just).
One writing combo missing: Marriott & Lane. They need a mention.

I was expecting a runaway Beatles week but at time of writing Ray Davies is pipping everybody. A close one this!

I'm not sure I've ever seen a "best song writing" poll or list without Dylan at the top of it! Not just 60s, but all time. Sorry, I just can't vote in this one. I like the Beatles better, but in terms of just song writing, it's hard to argue against Dylan.

I think Lennon & McCartney were the best in the all-round sense. Encompassing many musical styles, and slick recording techniques. The whole question though of "who is the best 60s songwriter" is so ambiguous. There are so many as well as those above: Jagger/Richards, Roy Wood, Cook/Greenaway, Jimmy Webb, Marriott/Lane, the list is indefinite....

I''m going to decline to vote because I can't pick one choice. Also, very few of the songs credited to Lennon & McCartney are true collaborations.

You're right that he is vastly underrated as a song writer during an after his time with The Byrds.
