Agreed, he was the face (and that chin, poked fun at by Spitting Image on many occasions). I agree with you on his footballing opinions - always seemed to be odd one out on the panel - but hey...what do I know?
RIP.

Well, I've posted 'elsewhere' about Jimmy, but if you missed it, I detested him with a passion. Like most lads growing up, I loved MotD essential viewing. Then in 1982, my first serious girlfriend was a member of the Anti Fox hunting Brigade. I went along to a sabotage meeting, where quality dust up with some young farmers was guaranteed, along with maximum disruption spoiling the Fox scent. We lay lots of peppermint and cayenne pepper which really buggered the beagles noses up for the day, no damage, just out of action. The hunt caught up with us, mainly students, some tasty lads and a few hard core foot soldiers, when who would surprise us with a foul mouthed tirade about trespassing on private land, but Jimmy Hill!. He screamed abuse with his face contorted with sheer rage and threatened to horsewhip the lot of us. Another bloke, who turned out to be future Coventry City manager, John Sillett joined in that he was in his rights to shoot us as we were on his land. It was great fun, really exciting. What really grated me was the following week, Jimmy was his usual suave personality with his genial delivery. From that moment on, I hated him. Hopefully, those poor foxes are nipping at his @rse in another place.

Oh, he was also a sometime escort to Mary Millington in the 1970s, so for that, I applaud him.

Hahahaha, that's a great tale, ace. Blimey, he must have been having a really bad day. And John Sillett had no bl***y right to say that to you guys. You should have responded by saying that it wouldn't have done his profile any good at all if he had killed someone on his land! What a p1ll0ck.
My brother and sister didn't like Jimmy Hill at all. He said that when he used to present Match Of The Day, he would usually only show brief highlights of games won by Liverpool and there would be extended highlights only if they played another top team like Man. Utd., Everton, Arsenal or Forest. I think my brother said he would show mostly matches where Liverpool lost. I also remember Michael Thomas being interviewed after the 1992 FA Cup final, saying that he had hoped that his spectacular goal against Sunderland would shut Jimmy Hill up.

He at least knew his stuff and managed Coventry City in the '70s. In an old annual of Shoot from either '78 or '79, they predicted that they would be the team to watch in the '80s and their only trophy from that decade was the 1987 FA Cup.
I'll never forget Jimmy falling out almost with Alan Hansen at half-time during the '92 FA Cup Final. I think he was criticizing the Reds' style of play and being a former Red, Hansen stood up for his old team mates.

Oh dear, an RIP thread that has stirred up an 'ornets cornet - Jimmy Hill was the last person I'd expect to do that. I believe this photo is some evidence of associations with Ms Millington ace ... Not for me to cast aspersions but as we know both of these two were a bit partial to getting their clothes off on the odd occasion. ...and not sure if the pic below further corroborates the fox story or not, but similarities are definitely there...

I'd never thought of that analogy, but yes I suspect Viz based some of Farmer Palmer (fox-hunting land-owner, pipe smoker) on Jimmy Hill. Regarding Jimmy himself, I generally liked him, though being the go-getting innovator that he was he no doubt had a brusque style beyond the affable TV persona. A friend of my dad who lives locally had a full career as a professional footballer. This included Coventry City during part of Jimmy Hill's reign, and he recalled him as a good manager. Footballers were subject to restrictive wages and contracts, and he was instrumental in changing this. Whilst this was right for the time, it is interesting how far the other way it has gone since. He always seemed more youthful than he was. RIP Jimmy Hill. P.S. where did the photo of Jimmy with Linda Haydn & Mary Millington come from? It does not appear to be from Simon Sheridan's book about Mary.

I'm sure that's the ONLY trophy Coventrys first team ever won. You get a Mickey mouse cup when you get promoted, so I'm not counting those. In fairness, he DID have the foresight to combat crowd trouble and got Coventry the first all seater stadium in Europe in the early 1980s.

He name checked me in both his books as I had some very rare footage from that era I gave him for 'research' I do know Miss Millington had several 'friends' at the time, Jimmy being one of them. An ex Prime Minister was another. Of course, after her notoriety and death Jimmy and her 'friends' were quick to distance themselves from her and airbrush themselves from her history, but lots of pictures still surface.

I think, as others have stated, JH's main contribution was to ensure footballer's got a reasonable wage. He deserves credit for that. RIP Enjoyed the fox hunting and Mary Millington stories.

I remember him being a regular on Stella Street where he was portrayed as an anally retentive bore. The posts on here suggest there was rather more to him than that. Fair play to him for escorting Mary Millington and Linda Hayden, the lucky b*gg*r.

In the mid 70s I think that soft core was being regarded as mainstream. Mary Millington was 'happening' and there was a 'buzz' around her, which Jimmy Hill would have been drawn to, by design or circumstance. She overlapped with both mainstream entertainment, and deeper hardcore. An unusual situation that I suspect came to the notice of higher authorities, leading to pressure upon Mary. Simon Sheridan's book shed much light on this period. P.S. I did notice you in the acknowledgements Ace

She overlapped with both mainstream entertainment, and deeper hardcore. An unusual situation that I suspect came to the notice of higher authorities, leading to pressure upon Mary. Her dalliances with an ex Prime Minister caused some very worried moments in the corridors of power in Whitehall. The Dutch films she made were a concern, but her risk of compromising high and powerful figures whilst working as a high class escort (obviously using her name as she was past it through her cocaine addiction) WAS something of a concern. Her paranoia from cocaine didn't help her. She was hounded for unpaid tax, her paranoia thought it was because of her other activities.

It seems that the paranoia brought her downfall. Simon Sheridan documented her life at this time in some detail, although some elements are unknown.
