Who do you think is cooler? Magnum, P.I. or Dan Tanna in Vega$?
As a show, I prefer Vega$ because that's more action-driven with some very exciting, intriguing storylines. Robert Urich is machismo personified as Dan Tanna and like Magnum, he drives a nifty red car too which is more of a vintage. On the other hand, Magnum has its moments, Tom Selleck is a good romantic lead who can also excel in action scenes and it has more of a laid-back atmosphere although it still had its intense, gritty, action-oriented moments.

Here's some supporting material for both candidates this week in case you haven't seem them recently. Magnum - Compilation
For me, no one is cooler than Thomas Magnum ... I had to vote for him. He is the epitome of all things cool.
- Ferrari
- Free riding on a posh Hawaiian estate right next to beach
- A true friend with a helicopter who regularly lets you jump in the sea
- A true friend with a bar and his finger in a million pies
- Cool scripts
- A pal called Higgins who winds you up, but you still love and respect him
- Sunshine pretty much all the time
- A fine collection of shirts

Just starting with Series 2 of Vega$...Tanna still rules.
@jno Might be better to put those video windows below each other, the ones on the right are cut off, at least on my notebook screen.

If it were Robert Urich as Spenser in Spenser for Hire, I'd take that over Magnum, PI. I don't think Vegas was as good a show as Spenser. Having said that, I'll vote Magnum here.

I have never heard of 'Spenser For Hire' until reading it recently on here. This looks very interesting though and is definitely one to check out at some point in the future. Those R1 DVD sets are astronomically priced though. Was 'Spenser For Hire' ever on in the UK? I've really never 'erd of it till recently.

In Germany it was only Spenser and badly Dubbed of course.
I also shrieked back seeing those prices.....
Anyway, I can't see a real competion in Magnum when it comes to comparison with Vegas, sorry.

I'll admit that I think Dan Tanna is the coolest. He's just an effortless tough dude who is also very cool, laid-back and most of all no-nonsense. He has the feel of a veteran who has seen it all before and generally, I thought he took on a lot more cases that were dangerous than Magnum did. Worth mentioning also that Robert and Tom starred in something together back in 1977.

Nope, not for me. Didn't watch Vega$ and hated Magnum although Higgins was funny.

When I occasionally catch Magnum, Selleck always seems to be in a shorts that make him look a bit odd.
In fact, he comes across as a bit creepy sometimes...
Perhaps it was a sign that, in later life, he would definitely look very odd in today's programme where he plays an older policeman!

Okay, so Selleck looks like a reject from ' Village People' but... any Yank who drives a Ferrari deserves the nod. Never liked Dan - he looked like a clone of the 70s Dallas type - or a Jonathan Hart slimey character.
Would like to see: Who's the coolest: Regan/Carter versus Bodie/Doyle

Look at your legs. Imagine they were muscular and tanned. Look at your chest, imagine it was broad, tanned and hairy. Look at your face. Imagine a handsome face with a moustache that you needed to comb every morning to brush out all the women from the night before. Now look outside at your crappy car. Imagine it is a red Ferrari. Look at the grey rainy sky. Imagine it is blue sky. See the lamp post with the dog urinating against it? Imagine it is a palm tree and the dog is in a pair of trunks surfing past in the sea. Now you are Magnum, the coolest of the cool. He's got a point ! They are convincing words in support of Magnum, magnumpi. My Mum used to fancy him so I voted for him on this poll. But no I don't imagine those things for myself.

I voted for Magnum because he lives in Hawaii which looks such an incredibly gorgeous place and, as has been mentioned, Higgins was funny. I don't find either Magnum or Tanna particularly cool, or charming, or attractive though to be honest.

It looks like Amazon in the US is selling a DVD-R complete series set for $34.99. I don't know if it ever aired in the UK. It also starred Avery Brooks (Star Trek Deep Space Nine) as "Hawk", Spenser's man on the street. It was filmed in Boston and worth a watch.

Not half as good as the person he's sitting next to though. This is of course Charlie's Angels. Jaclyn Smith alert - omgg, I've just fainted. I liked 'An Innocent Man' with Tom Selleck - caught it late on ITV one night in the 90s and watched it from start to finish. www.imdb.com/title/tt0097579/

Short shorts were the style in the 80s, and yes, they would definitely be considered creepy now. As seen here in a basketball photo from that era:

I've never heard of Vega$? That's why this forum is fun (along with the Minder bits) as I hear of new films and tv programmes to look up.
I voted for Magnum which has the wonderful Higgins in it.

Vega$ was shown on ITV from 1978-81 and was never repeated, although I remember a rare Saturday night repeat in '83 or '84, but don't know which episode it was. Might have been as a result of a programme change.

There ought to be a channel that shows repeats of these 2 shows. In the US, F/X repeated Vega$ in the '90s.

Just came across this debate! And while I’m six episodes into Vega$, series 1, I thought it apt to add my two-penneth in.
I remember both series as a youngster, but Magnum PI far more vividly. I was older too, a teenager, when Tom Selleck and Co were on the telly. I loved Magnum and watched it all the time.
Vega$ was popular too. Everyone seemed to know who Dan Tanna was in the 80s, even though the show had not been on the telly for ages. He is a good character, making use of modern tech in a 57 Thunderbird and being pretty damn hard in a fist fight. Like Magnum, he was ex-Vietnam, and you can see how US scriptwriters used these characters in the years after America’s defeat in the 1970s, to lift the public’s mood.
It’s a hard one to vote who is the best character.I can’t vote against Magnum, but I like Dan Tanna too.
If the question was ‘Which is the best series?’, I’d definitely vote Magnum PI. Vega$ has too many silly characters, Tony ‘Slick’ Curtis constantly walking around all the time in a rush, Dan Tanna calling in freebies from mates who never ask for anything in return whilst seemingly using firearms as a PI with carte blanche AND....the story where Dan drives a lion in his car just borders on the ridiculous.
My vote: Sitting on the Fence. But Magnum PI is a much better series.
