Inspired by: Karin B, a thread by dscarter1975 and a comment by Portland Road. I think it's pretty clear from comments I've read by my film loving brethren here over the years that The Dead Pool is by far the worst Harry Callahan film in the Dirty Harry series. Which begs the question, in your opinion - which the best film to feature Harry Callahan? No fence sitting this week, it is a straight .44 Magnum shootout between: Dirty Harry (1971)Magnum Force (1973)The Enforcer (1976)Sudden Impact (1983)

Is it bad that I haven't seen a single Clint Eastwood film...?

Is it bad that I haven't seen a single Clint Eastwood film...? Dreadful! I would start with the Dirty Harry films - in the order above.

However I will always have an attraction to Sandra Locke. For that reason I watch The Gauntlet a lot. Not 'Death Game' then??!

Bit confused over this one. It says Callahan's 'Best Shootout' on the top of the thread... Then 'Best Film to feature Callahan' on the poll...
Hmmm.. Dirty Harry is the best film of the series on my reckoning, though the best shoot out could be any of 'em. They've all got their moments.
In the end I went with the shoot out idea and voted for Sudden Impact..! Love the opening diner scene, very amusing. Underrated movie.

I'm finding it difficult to decide between 'Dirty Harry' and 'Magnum Force'. They're both top drawer, very cool and slick thrillers. Both contain some stand-out scenes and dialogue, with the right amount of action and suspense.
We all like Harry Callaghan for his no-nonsense attitude toward dealing with low-life criminals and the way he bucks ridiculous rules and regulations by standing up to superiors.
My vote's going to 'Dirty Harry' purely because it was the first in the series and the character of Harry Callaghan must have hit the movie scene like a brick.

If we're talking 'shoot-outs', I'm going for 'Magnum Force' and the firefight at the docks. From the bad guys eating Chinese takeaway, "Nobody's here! Come back tamarra!" through the young motorcycle cop being blasted through the door, then the big shoot 'em up and finally Clint taking a ride on the bonnet (or should I say 'hood') before the the crane decapitates the limo driver as he's trying to get away. Brilliant!

I concur, although personally, I liked The Gauntlet best as well.

Dirty Harry and Magnum Force were the best movies IMHO. Like The Sweeney, Dirty Harry belonged in the '70s. Sudden Impact was more like an arthouse version of Death Wish 3 because you had a vengeful vigilante teaming up with a tough cop. It did have some glorious moments though such as "Go ahead, make my day!" which Ronald Reagan famously mimicked. The Dead Pool could have been just any action flick rather than a DH film. With it being made in the late '80s, it could have featured either Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis or Sly Stallone.
As for best shootouts, I like the one on the rooftops with Scorpio in DH, the final one at the quarry in DH, the raid on the gangsters and the supermarket gun battle in MF, the bank job one in The Enforcer, when he kills those mob hitmen in SI and the restaurant one in TDP.

It is 'Dirty Harry' as a clear winner for me.

I am halfway through Sudden Impact now and found all of them great up to now. Many years ago I only saw the First, the rest is totally new for me. Cant really say that they degrade over their reincarnations, much better than a lot of copfilms elsewhere. And a hell of a soundtrack in all of them, especially when connected to my new Yamaha Subwoofer The two coolest catchphrases only appear as late as this fourth part: Callahan: "We don't approve...!" Perp: "Who's "we" "? Callahan: "Smith, Wesson and me !" and "Come on, make my day!" Great movies....and Callahan is just ****ing the blonde murderer as I write this ...

Sudden Impact is criminally underrated.. It's got a bulldog blowing off in it for a start!! What more does a movie need?

Tyne Daly, you're right, forgot her completely....shame they let her die. OK, all those dialogues, I agree. But all in all I find the films more gritty than comedic....and that farting dog somehow sticks out Why isn't part 5 (Dead Pool, 1988) in that list above? OK, Harrys aged a bit in this, but it is also part of the series, isnt it? Still to watch it next, tho.

Finished part 5...ok, it is definitly below the first 4, but that idea of re-shooting the Bullitt-car chase with an "RC car turned bomb" is quite original... A before-fame Liam Neeson as well as Jim "recognizable artifical teeth" Carrey as the first victim are two bonuses...

I liked Guns 'N Roses' cameo appearance during the funeral scene in The Dead Pool. Agreed, nice to see the inclusion of Axl & pals who were massive at the time. As for why 'The Dead Pool' isn't in the list - it is a non-starter and was never likely to win, hence its exclusion (see original post).

Was 'The Dead Pool' the one that had the shooting when they are in a lift that is on the outside of the building ? I thought that was quite a watchable film. Quite a tense and action packed lift sequence.

Hate it when you log on quickly and post while at work, then afterwards you see spelling and grammatical errors which can't be amended once you've been quoted. Lol Oh well nevermind.)

I have watched all the Dirty Harry films recently, just 'The Dead Pool' to go.
I actually thought 'The Enforcer' was better than I remember it, with quite a lot of humour in it. In this one Harry's catchphrase seems to be 'Marvellous'.
Last night I watched 'Sudden Impact' which by comparison I found very flat. In Sudden Impact they take Harry out of San Francisco and despite Lalo Schifrin doing the music, it still sounded like an episode of Spenser: For Hire to me. It's still a good film is Sudden Impact, but it's not as good as the first three. Harry's catchphrase of 'Swell' every 5 minutes also gets a bit cringeworthy after a while. At the end, I'm also not sure Harry entirely 'upholds the law' with final dialogue either.
Why is Bradford Dillman playing a different character in this to in 'The Enforcer'? Tbh, the characters are so similar, I thought it was the same character.
