Actor and writer Colin Welland has died www.BBC.co.uk/news/uk-34711578. I remember him best as loud-mouthed robber Tober (remember him yelling "Sweeney!!!!!!!") in Faces. He also wrote various Plays for Today, such as Leeds United, Kisses at Fifty and Roll on Four O'Clock.

Yes, sad news indeed. A fine actor in some great movies: 'Kes', 'Villain', 'Straw Dogs' and 'Sweeney!'. As mentioned, he was also an accomplished writer.
To an older generation he will be best remembered for his long stint in 'Z Cars'.
RIP Colin.

Sad passing of Colin today, just a few days after the Kes thread. Immortalised in The Sweeney as well, but famous for Chariots of Fire.

That is sad news. He was always a stand out on screen with that instantly recognisable voice and was a joy to watch. We had just been talking 'Kes' on here too.
RIP Colin

Very sad.
Good actor - I've always looked at him as a screenwriter. Love the film 'Yanks'.

Shame to read this news yesterday. A good actor who was equally as gifted as a screenwriter.

Very sad news, a good addition to any production he appeared in. Does anyone remember an early-mid 80s series he was in called 'Cowboys'? CW was the foreman of a gang of bumbling builders iirc.
RIP.

I remember him best as loud-mouthed robber Tober (remember him yelling "Sweeney!!!!!!!") in Faces. Unforgettable scene -Tober baying for blood. Sergeant Carter got lucky that day finding those public toilets to hide in. And yet thanks to Welland's performance he wasn't just a one dimensional thug. Loved his one liners about the bunker and talking to the IRA sympathiser through a medium. Sorry to hear he suffered with Alzheimer's Disease in later life. Seems particularly cruel for a man who who earned his living from his imagination i.e. his plays, film scripts and his acting as well I suppose. P.S. I remember Cowboys. There's a scene that always sticks in my mind where someone (probably Roy Kinnears) wants Colin Welland's character to look in the loft of a house they're working on and he says "Who do you think's up there? Martin Borman?" Something like that. Made me laugh anyway. RIP Mr Welland.

RIP Colin Welland. A memorable man, no doubt.
I loved his portrayal of the aggressive journalist in 'Sweeney!' (the first film). When the assassins turned up disguised as window cleaners his reaction to them, reminiscent of Bryan Mosley in 'Get Carter'. A powerful bloke under pressure, and this was just one more thing.
