Patrick Macnee has died aged 93. I loved him as Steed in The Avengers/New Avengers and the other roles he did like his 'Magnum' episode and 'A View To A Kill'. RIP Patrick www.BBC.co.uk/news/uk-33279566

Very sad news. R.I.P. Is George Cole now the only actor alive from 'Scrooge'? Looking at IMDB, only George Cole and David Hannaford, the boy sent to buy turkey, are still alive.

He also appeared in Vega$ as a playboy villain and starred as the initially well-intentioned but ultimately sinister Count Iblis in the original Battlestar Galactica. But he will always be Steed to so many people of all generations.

Very sad. Loved the Steed role. The perfect stereotypical English gent.

Just heard now. Another british legend gone. Always remember he was in the Oasis video 'don't look back in anger" as the taxi driver. He lived in California for the past fourty years as well.

What is interesting is that he gave up his British citizenship to become an American in 1959 (everyone mentioning that in the obituaries too). As Steed with his bowler hat and umbrella (and let's not forget The Avengers is known all over) he portrayed the stereotypical image of British man of the period. So why then did he take on American citizenship only to do Steed? Why did he surrender his British citizenship in the first place?
I also remember seeing him in the Oasis video - this was pretty cool at the time and I always wondered why he did that as well.

Patrick was THE English Gentleman. Great actor. Lovely chap. His autobiography is worth a read as well.
RIP John Steed.

ALL rock music fans will mourn his passing after his portrayal of a dodgy Record Company boss in Spinal Tap. California resident for MANY years, so happy he kept his quintessential English accent and didn't have that yankee twang in his accent like Joan Collins or Jane Seymour.

Sadly, I gave his autobiography to the charity shop years ago and that book had all the answers. Wasn't it a doctrine of the USA? They didn't allow dual citizenship. I think you could keep your British passport but you needed to become 'Americanised' to live there on a permanent basis. Or presumably that's how it worked back then. Bob Hope was a good example of a Brit-turned-American. Having said all that, don't quote me on that as I'm unsure about the legalities.

RIP Patrick Macnee. I haven't looked at 'The Avengers' for some years, but it is a series I would like to view again.
Regarding his US citizenship, because he was prolifically working in US/Canadian TV during the later 50s, he must have decided that his future career was there.
In the midst of this he came back to the UK for a job on a documentary, and happened to also land a part in 'The Avengers'. At this stage, there was probably no indication that it would endure beyond one season, and it was Ian Hendry's vehicle anyway. Hendry left after this first season, though this had been successful. It was re-commissioned and Macnee was moved up to be the main man.
Therefore, as far as Patrick was concerned, the success of the show was probably unexpected, but having happened he went with it. Interesting that 'The Avengers' also took off in the USA, and it was their money that gradually enhanced the series from being 30 min b&w video-taped to 60 min 35mm film episodes.
