One of the greatest episodes ever. So many memorable scenes with classic dialogue and one-liners.
If I had to pick a couple it would be in court where Arthur Edward Daley stands up whilst Chisholm is giving evidence to enlighten the court about the meaning of the phrase "fit-up" and also Terry's description of Soames "He makes Chisholm look like a welfare worker"

5/5 and a top 3 episode for me.
Arthur's line "That is all the market can bear" when handing over a few quid to Terry in the Winch is so evocative of the economic policies of the early Thatcher years. In fact, I still use that phrase today when buying things at car boot sales, market stalls and even at used car dealerships - anywhere I can haggle on the price.
"I'll give you ten quid and that's all the market can bear" with a painful expression Arthur Daley style. Haha!

Great episode, for many reasons already posted above; and because it includes Debbie. All of Arthur's court appearances are great, this being no exception. In most of these, he constantly changes his reference terminology to the judge - "My Lord", "Your Lordship", "Your Worship".

Brilliant episode full of fantastic lines, especially Arthur's description of the judge as the 'the fella in the Father Christmas gear' is priceless. I had a French O level verbal exam around this time and they asked me (in French) for my favourite TV programme. 'C'est Minder' was my reply.

Watched it again yesterday on ITV 4. Must be one of my favourite episodes along with 'Back In good old England' with Jack 'Oily' wragg, the 'Beer Hunter' 'the balance of power' and 'in' with brian cox Magic. Smith in the dock saying he was 'up on offer' had me chuckling and Dave's 'Ponce' comment was cut for some reason.
George cole was imperious at this point. The bit where he's going on about being in the very neucleus of the british justice system to a knackered Jury with his hair sticking up like Syd Barrett after shattering a dozen Phenobarbital capulets over his barnet had me roaring. Genius. The greatest television show ever made.
Love the word 'Cotchell' . Always drop that one whenever I can.

Wasn't impressed at all with Jones' attitude in this one, usually he can be relied on to put in a word for our duo to take the wind out of his superiors worst excesses, but here he just clammed up, Terry looked to him for a bit of support on the way to search the lock up, but nothing at all was forthcoming, much to Tel's disgust.

True. I can't remember the episode but I recall Terry getting a grilling from Chisholm and Jones in the police interview room and Terry saying (pointing to Jones) something like, 'don't worry about him, he's Welsh'!. It might have been the same episode when him and arthur started to ad lib about 'the thin blue line' with Arthur nodding his head in approval at Terry. Magic.

ps For years I never understood the animosity from Terry to Arthur in series 7. I didn't like it and hated it when Terry put his hands on Arthur a few times. Hated it. Didn't understand it.
Despite being a Minder addict it somehow passed me by of the release of 'An Officer and a Car Salesman',( I must have been at Acid house raves off the m25 in 1988), with the story of Terry being slung in the peter because of Storing Arthurs Dodgy gear. thus explaining Terrys attitude to Arthur. Shame. I always remenber arthur writing that note to Terry when he was going in for his operation. You could see in that scene that him and Terry really cared for each other.

One of the greatest episodes ever. So many memorable scenes with classic dialogue and one-liners. I like Anthony Chinn's enigmatic sayings which leave Arthur increasingly nonplussed.

I watched this again recently and this is one of the best episodes they ever did. There is something for everyone, whether you prefer early or later episodes - you just cannot be disappointed.
Cole is on top form here, though he has about 3 episodes of dialogue in 50 minutes!
The jury is used by Hoare as a view of the class system, not dissimilar to Trevor Preston's Sweeney episodes. The 'Boat Race, Madam' line is an absolute classic.

I don't think I'd have recognised Diana Malin from the main photo in the TV Times article if the pic had appeared on its own elsewhere. Wonder if Diana passed on her hair care tips to the Syrup but I must implore anyone on the forum who's thinking of using her advice on treating their barnet with avocado, eggs, vinegar or lemon juice to tread carefully. Get that wrong and you could end up in a right 2 and 8 and niff like Pongo 'arris on a summer's day. Btw it was never made clear if Pongo's wife had permanently blocked nostrils. I'd take this lively episode over the earnest but dreary original film any day. Henry Fonda was a good actor but to me he had the charisma of a wet fish and a film with a message (which few took heed of, as can be seen by historical events) and which was made in black and white sees me snoozing in no time. Fonda was also far from the decent American everyman in real life. A faithful and loving husband he wasn't. Whereas there's loads of classic lines from Arthur in and out of the courtroom and good contributions from a few jury members. The guy who provokes John Bardon is clearly miffed at not being chosen to chair proceedings and Arthur (sort of!) rises to the challenge in his own unique way. Larry Martyn was also excellent casting as the accused, all shifty and devious as Smith. I'm right on offer, ain't I? The judge shivers in disgust. As if Smithy didn't go camping with his old ma or allow a casual acquaintance to park bent gear at his gaff. Larry was always entertaining in Are You Being Served and other productions and he passed away far too soon. Although a pub scene in Minder would normally be peopled by extras, the boozer Arthur makes a quick departure from seems to feature the odd real barrister. There's one guy with grey hair in barrister's clothing who just doesn't look like an extra to me. Re DC Jones, I think he was too wary of upsetting Soames, as although the latter wasn't likely to be around the manor long, Jones realised he had to defer to Soames's higher rank. It's unclear if Soames borrowed Linda Agran's telly sized specs as shown in the schools and colleges programme on another thread... James Cossins played a similar role in a Likely Lads episode, as a magistrate in front of whom James Bolam and future New Tricks co-star Alun Armstrong appear as Terry Collier and Scaife answering charges of assault. Collier is as crafty in court as he is on the cobbles scrapping and attempts to play the injured innocent whilst placing the blame solely on Scaife. The fight started after Collier and Scaife got involved in an argument. Not about politics, religion or history, but with regard to Scaife's girlfriend's chest, or lack of it.

I love the part when Arthur says he is doing his duty for Queen and Country and Chisholm just replies 'B******t!' It's funny and the perfect way for the character to reply. given his opinion of Arthur. The word couldn't have been used on a broadcast American TV show of that era. Watched this excellent episode for the third time tonight. Cheerful Charlie Chisholm responding to Arthur still makes me laugh out loud. One on my favorite moments in the series. Watched this episode for the fourth time tonight and still laughed out loud at this part. 😄
