Certainly a hurried ending but I can forgive easily as Chisholm was even better than normal. The expression and reaction to Arthur standing for law and order was superb.

I stand by my previous comments that this episode is great bordering on excellent but lacking that little something extra to push it into that category. That said, I love this episode and it's one of my favorites. I enjoyed it even more the second time.

Watching this now,as good as i remembered it to be first time round. All the scenes at the Council offices are bang on.'I am making a very careful note of your attitude'....'Excellent', the line about the criminal record 'Do i need one?'.Slight blooper where Arthur tries to go thru the right hand door and it wont open but as he moves to use the left door, there is a 'push' sign on the former.Love the 'mind the bl*ody bumps Terry for Gawds sake ' over the loud speaker whilst out canvassing.Too many good points to list them all but a really fast paced episode only let down slightly at the very end and doesn't Arthur look dodgy on his posters. Top line: they did wonders for my gout! As someone who suffers from gout,it sums up the contents of the 'liquer chocolates '

The guy who hassles Arthur about his parking is played by Michael Ripper who starred in many Hammer horror films, often as an innkeeper in the obligatory creepy small village. Also often cropped up as a jumped-up jobsworth, much like here - the type who, once given a clipboard and a peaked cap, becomes Napoleon. Great character actor, born to say lines like "Oi, you can't park there", etc

Michael Ripper gets a few honourable mentions in other parts of this forum too for his appearances in many 50s and 60s films.

One of my least favourite Terry episodes this. It feels like the sort of episode Dennis Waterman had in mind when he said it was becoming the Arthur Daley Comedy Hour. Some nice business at the start with the council offices but it curdles after that for me. The ending is awful. Caroline Langrishe looks splendid though!

An average one for me. The ending is weak, and we have to assume that A Daley didn't end up making it as a councillor, as it would have had to be mentioned later, and you just can't see Arthur bothering with all those complaints to fix drains and push for local housing for too long. This episode should almost have been a 90 minute special to tie up the story properly.
In the car lot Arthur has a blue BMW 3.0 CSL sitting there through a few series 5 episodes. That and the red Jaguar XJC beside it were tasty motors that would be worth a few quid as nailed on classics today. Arthur dealt in some fine metal over the years through the car lot. It wasn't all minis and Renault 6s with rust.

Wonder if those cars were actually owned by Euston employees?

Caught the end of this on OTV4 tonight and noticed that as well as Grandad from OFAH being on it, Dels Dad appeared in it too.
I have to give this one another watch in full sometime soon.

35 years later... nice to see that Minder and Arfur are still topical (and essential viewing) in some quarters...

It is a BMW 3.0CS which is the cooking version.

Still, A Daley was (very) occasionally a purveyor of fine motors

ITV4 this morning but I've seen it a number of times over the years. Some really good moments but a lot of loose ends: What happened to the CPO? Presumably didn't happen as Arthur still has the car lot in subsequent episodes... Guess the election result was indeed null and void as it's never mentioned again... Why would a Fleet St journo be interested in doing a story on Terry's low-level boxing career? And would she really be interested in Terry or Arthur's local election? Who were the guys trying to disrupt Arthur's campaign? At the very end it is implied they're one Labour one Conservative councillor but it's not terribly clear unless I've missed something. Anyway... As some of the comments above, Chisholm is particularly brilliant in this one, I think the Chisholm and Jones episodes are my favourites and you can see why there's more Charlie and less Ronnie in these episodes.

Always had a soft spot for this episode. Lots of funny moments - The scenes at the town hall are gold "Is he a recording?". Loved Arthur canvassing the manor, taking a short cut through that hedge "I saw Michael Heseltine do this". Wanting to stay at Terry's flat, setting it up as his campaign headquarters. Caroline Langrishe is stunning as well. Unfortunately the second half cannot match the first and the ending feels rushed. Overall though yet another great episode. 4.5 out of 5.

Arthur : How am I doing? Tel : Well, so far you've promised to unblock fifteen drains, re-decorate twenty-seven rooms, repair four roofs and allow nineteen Australians to stay here indefinitely. That would have been a busy week for Terry!

Typical of Arthur to go into something with all guns blazing - no half measures. I laugh out loud at the Heseltine comment every time, Arthur looks like he's been waiting to do this for years .

Occasionally, just occasionally, you get a real glimpse of boyhood eagerness in Arthur's eyes - like a kid in a sweetshop; you get it here, and also when going on the Dodgems with Ray in 'Opportunity Knocks & Bruises'...

I agree regarding the very rushed and consequently strange ending. It a good story line with some excellent characters. I thought the drunken journo was a great character and brilliantly played by Peter Woodthorpe, AKA Reg Trotter. I also thought Lennard Pearce’s character was fantastic with his penchant for capital punishment. Chisholm also gets a decent part in this one too, which inevitably adds to the enjoyment.

A small continuity error (blooper) that I noticed, when Arthur first goes to the town hall, he drives in to the car park and you can see a Talbot Alpine in red with a black vinyl roof, Arthur then parks his Daimler next to an orange Ford Capri (with no-one in it) the scene then briefly cuts to the Commissionaire before returning to Arthur but the orange Capri has moved from next to the Daimler and is now parked next to the Alpine (still with no-one in it).

Arthur to Terry when he's peeved at the journo doing an article on Tel: "The nearly man....it's not enough they've got bingo, bums and bristols". I was a bit upset and annoyed at Terry in this episode though, ending up in bed with Caroline Langrishe. That should've been me.

It is great to Meic getting an official credit and by this time Chisholm and him were right up there as the captains of sub-plot. There's some great trademark sarcasm from Chisholm in this episode - the line about taking Arthur and Terry for a ride in his police car with the flashing lights made me smile.
I like how the two councillors, one from each party, are so similar to each other. You can't tell which is Labour and which is Conservative. The one without the 'tache reminded me of Satan's Landlord Nicholas van Hoogstraaten so possibly he's the right winger of the two. Anway, you get the impression the elected members of whatever political stripe have the borough nicely carved up between them, regardless of ideology. The last thing they want is an outsider rocking the boat. Although as Julie says Arthur would of course be highly amenable to a deal or two.

One of my favourite episode that tackles politics Arthur Daley style. Some previous comments have said it could have had a better ending and maybe a little bit more action (I'm guessing) but the simple way works good too - the thick irony that Arthur is disqualified for overspending, was never lost on me...

Really enjoyed watching this again today for the first time in many years. Highlights were Caroline Langrishe, "Wyatt Earp", Lennard Pearce's backing for corporal punishment, the battle of the Mayor's parking space and Chisholm's disbelief that Arthur had bought musical monkeys that played 'Scotland the Brave'.
The ending did seem rather rushed, and as others have said, there was no word on the future of the car lot, but these are minor quibbles in what was a very enjoyable episode.

Another great one. I think season 5 has more 5 star episodes than any other , its less gritty and more comedic .
Memorable lines .. Arthur turning up at Terrys " Have you had your locks changed "
