I voted for Slade as even though I love both songs all I can hear is my mother complaining "I b%$£*y don't" every time Wizzard's song was on
Absolutely love Far Far Away and Everyday by Slade. Very underrated band even now. Trivia - Dave Hill was at a wedding some friends went to recently.
We went to see Sweet at KK's Steel Mill a couple of weeks ago although as there is only Andy Scott left it should probably be called "A quarter of..." Loved the venue and such a shame it is a 2/3 hour drive away.
Edited to add that the band were absolutely brilliant

Pleasing to see that this is a tie, every time I look. Each time there's more votes but it's still a tie. Currently 5-5. Good to see love for both songs. Slade currently winning 14-7 votes. Maybe Wizzard need to think about that vote margin before putting singing children in their songs.

Well, at least it's not (pass the sickbag) St. Winifred's School Choir...

The 80s hits were very popular at the time, but have been rarely played since. The mindset seems to be that Slade were a "70s band", and the fact that they had top ten hits in other periods is overlooked.
Maybe it is because they were a bit of a throwback - 'My Oh My' (1983) and 'We All Join Hands' (1984) sound very akin to the 'Slade In Flame' hits of ten years prior.

This is a very good point, I'd forgotten all about those 1980s hits. Good tracks as well, sort of melancholy anthems (if that's not an oxymoron).

The same could be said of Queen as a '70's band' but had hits after in the 80's etc etc I think it is just a label given to those in the music media.

People slate his jumper but what about the children’s hair? Not even some scumbag kiddy fiddler would molest children with haircuts that bad, surely?

I know crazy what was considered normal is frowned up or looks plain creepy or dodgy in this day and age. Same with what motorsport was like in the 80's & 90's no pitlane speed limits open cockpits exposed drivers heads shoulders unsafe tracks compared to today's standards. I was born in 86 so using that as my reference point I know motorsport F1 was deadly in the 70's.

Never heard either song. Neither caught on here in the US, and I'm glad they didn't. Both are terrible. Hey MB, I just watched the Christmas movie Violent Night and Slade’s song is the song playing on the closing credits, so it can’t be completely unknown. A strong budget on the movie so I can’t imagine they would go for a cheap, unknown British song at the end. I think your winding us up. I bet Slade are massive in the USA.

There's probably a reason it's playing over the end credits when everyone is leaving the theater. It would help them clear out faster. Slade only ever had two songs that broke the top 50 in the US, both in 1984. One hit #20 and the other #37. Some quirky videos shown on Mtv probably helped them reach that high.

I might be slightly biassed because I love Roy Wood and Wizzard so for me this is the best Christmas's song out of the entire bunch. It tops Slade for me.

Dreadful song that. ...and it was released in 1979 so probably needs a dishonourable mention and your vote in the other Christmas song thread. minder.proboards.com/thread/1604/humbug-Christmas-songs-erase-history

Paul Mcartney's song was a pleasant one, but Roy Wood & Wizzard brought a storming song that would have been a classic hit even if the lyrics were not about Christmas.

At which point in the history of Christmas music did it become so commercial you ended up hating some Christmas songs?
As it was not always like that in the past in my experience,is it because it's the SAME songs that are always played on the radio and in shops or something else?
In my experience there are a lot of Christmas songs that hardly get played nowadays but I do hear the same old ones being played on a loop and it just feels to me that all shops have a copy of Now That's What We Call Christmas Vol 500 and play it to death!!🙄

Total dreck. Bar none, one of the worst things about Christmas.

Has to be Slade but both great songs.
I think the "It's Chriiiiiistmaaaas" line probably gives it the edge.
Noddy Holders Wife posted on Twitter recently that he wasn't very well, he has had prostate cancer for a number of years and sounds as though he may be in the last stages of his fight.

At which point in the history of Christmas music did it become so commercial you ended up hating some Christmas songs? Christmas songs in the 1970s were generally credible, and could have been hits with non-festive lyrics. John Lennon, Slade, Wizzard, Elton John, Mud, Showaddywaddy, The Wombles, Greg Lake, Johnny Mathis, Hot Chocolate and Boney M all had Christmas songs in their established hit styles. Perhaps it was the 80s when you had a more novelty element creeping-in, e.g., Gary Glitter, Shakin' Stevens, and there were the easy-listening Christmas number ones like Julio Iglesias, Renee & Renato that although not festive as such, probably wouldn't have been big hits at other times of year.
