I work in a retail DIY store and every year we have to put up with the same Xmas 24/7 till January I'm off this week and go back to work on Monday. Though when i go back I am expecting the dreaded torture of Xmas music on repeat for every sh1t.
Though the last 2 years, we have finally got proper music songs from 60's70's 80's 90's and current songs as they now have a music licence before it was all random songs by random unsigned bands and singers somewhere f***ing awful.
The xmas covers we had every year some covers were horrific Band-Aid was a laughable cover, especially the person who was doing Bono's line he was so off key it was laughable

Yeah, I remember those. So much so in some case that after years of playing the cheap imitations as a kid, it took a while in later years to accept the genuine versions as the proper ones!
And in some cases, they weren't that awful and even Elton John performed on a good number as a session musician before hitting the big time.

Yes, the 'Top Of The Pops' cover versions were often a good alternative interpretation of the original song.
Regarding Christmas songs, the Slade & Wizzard ones get the recognition, as do those by Mud, Greg Lake and Johnny Mathis.
Though from that same mid-70s period, the Christmas songs by The Wombles and Showaddywaddy are overlooked, the latter particularly so - it is one of the greatest singles of their catalogue.

Tony Rivers sang lead vocals on many of those Top of the Pops albums - and he was a fantastic and versatile singer. I suspect that most lads just bought them for the front cover rather than the 'covers' contained within! They certainly seemed to have passed into legend now and I can well imagine that they are collectible. I remember them well... the front covers anyway!

CM appeared on the front of the second of the special 'European Editions'. topofthepopslps.weebly.com/europe-editions.html Quite a lot of the cover models were well known at the time. Linda Lussardi appeared on the front cover of the final 'regular' TOTP album in 1985. The website is strangely fascinating and it's incredible what they achieved so quickly and on such a regular basis. The schedule must have been punishing. I love these quotes... Volume 45 (SHM 905) - May 1975 Comments: This album contains a legendary recording: "Autobahn". It was Kraftwerk's debut hit from their fourth album trimmed down from its original 22 minutes for hit single status. Top of the Pops had to tackle it, and Bruce Baxter took to the task, requisitioning a state-of-the-art ARP 2500 synthesiser. With Tony Rivers delivering the vocal (perilously close to The Beach Boys), Top of the Pops pull off one of their most admired and celebrated period recordings, a brilliantly executed piece of work which has won a stream of accolades, and rightly so. Volume 49 (SHM 925) - December 1975 Comments: This album features the most famous Top of the Pops cut: the legendary version of "Bohemian Rhapsody". Mojo (Issue 82, September 2000): "It took Queen almost three weeks and 180 vocal overdubs. Tony Rivers needed one night. Bruce Baxter: 'Kenny Everett spliced them together, the original and ours, played it on the radio and said, "I defy anyone to tell me which one they’re listening to".' The Pops series at its best." This recording was even released as a single in Italy! It was billed as by a group called Green Fly.

Mr. Christmas. A shame in a way as Slade were a decent band but all they get remembered for really is their Christmas single. I suppose on the other side of the coin it's kept them in the mainstream for life.

I suppose on the other side of the coin it's kept them in the mainstream for life. And quite possibly kept Jim and Noddy in the money for the last 50 years. I'll guess that this song has probably made them more £££ than all the others combined. A nice little festive earner for a song that originally was about something else entirely.

I suppose on the other side of the coin it's kept them in the mainstream for life. I agree, it's a shame that Slade are mainly remembered for this. But, I think they were more than a decent band - some of their stuff is truly brilliant. 'How does it Feel' is perhaps my favourite single. A really powerful, poignant record which really showcases Noddy Holder's vocals. What a great voice he had, so distinctive. Brutal yet beautiful. That single captures so much for me.

Yes, we are going a bit OT here, but I always prefer the hits towards the end of Slade's original top ten run (1974-75) than the out & out glam rockers of 1972-73.

Wandering ever further off topic ... to be fair, both of them are light years better than this puke inducing German version of a popular Christmas tune we all know. Not sure where he's supposed to in the video either, but it all looks well dodgy and this has sod all to do with Christmas but it's so bad I had to post it somewhere.
| When you say to yourself Everything is over When you don't believe She'll always be true Turn around once Look into her face And you'll see Tears don't lie By day and by night With her everything was beautiful The door is open Will you really go Like an open book Her heart is for you And you realise Tears don't lie Spilled wine No one drinks it anymore A lost heart Will stay empty forever It's never too late Come on, make up your mind: Reach out to her Tears don't lie The great city beckons with its splendour With beautiful women, with music and dance But appearances never keep What it promises Turn back at last Tears don't lie Just turn around Look at her face And you'll see Tears don't lie

One of Slade - I can't remember who but I have a feeling it was Jim - tells a nice story about how they recorded the song during a period of exceptionally hot weather in July 1973 and they had to keep having breaks because there was sweat dripping off them in the studio. Singing a song about snow and Xmas

Am I right in thinking neither Slade or Wizzard followed up their Christmas tunes with another Christmas tune the following year or even after that? I think not.
As most artists/bands have more than one released.

One of my friends is going to see 'Slade' tonight. He says he'll ring me from the gig! Can't wait! Let's be honest, it's just Dave Hill these days and three guys who no one recognises or cares about... how many hits did they play on again? It's just a tribute band. But Dave Hill was a great guitarist and is one of my friend's heroes. As he said "One out of four ain't bad!" I bet we can all predict which song they are 100% guaranteed to play!

...yes. As a matter of fact, he rang at precisely 9pm to let me know that "Slade are coming on to the theme from Thunderbirds!" And indeed they were. I'm sure the gig was F.A.B. I listened to a lot of Slade's 1980s-early 1990s stuff last night. They were still writing bangin' tunes - Lock Up Your Daughters - but had morphed into a kind of '80s, glam, soft/heavy rock band. Radio Wall of Sound just sounds like Def Leppard to me. Some great stuff there, but their '70s output was the best.
