This was a good episode with a real gritty plot and some funny moments. I would love to have seen Hargreaves get a pasting as he seemed quite an obnoxious character who rated himself. The contrast in the women vying for Ray’s companionship is stark and very cleverly done. The scenes in The West End at night were classic and brought the whole thing to life.

Very good episode I thought. I find some of the Ray Daley episodes drag on but not this one. Plot wasn't over the top and was unpredictable. Not sure I would have chosen Vanessa over Marion though.
Was the actor who played Hargreaves also the boxing promotor when Terry makes his boxing comeback?

Agree that this is up there with the best of the Ray episodes. Great characters. Classic Arthur quotes when praising the individual mannequins at the lock-up for not moaning and getting names and places mixed up.... Jack Cornwall should be Jack Cornwell. "You didn't get Nelson whinging at Waterloo"(Trafalgar) 5 out 5 for me.

I'd totally echo what jno said.
Back in the early 1990s I'd catch parts of episodes, and I vividly remember coming home having just got my driving licence months earlier been out all evening driving and seeing the fight at the end and being shocked at the hiding Ray was receiving
I dunno why but when i replayed the ITV 4 recording this evening the boat of the sign language fella was right in the middle of the bleedin screen. Not very convenient. The fight seemed cut too..
Derrick Branche was certainly versatile I had no idea its the same actor in my beautiful launderette and Only When I laugh. He would be 47 here and Natascha Elhorn 22 but they certainly looked a good looking couple but both thoroughly nasty pieces of work. The "Vanessa" character was probably a sadistic psychopath one of the cruellest characters ive seen in Minder but theres no way I'd rate her in the same class of Samantha Janus who Ray turned her down for. Still I guess thats why its acting :-)....I'm going to dig up my uncut dvds to review the fight scene I've just seen this weekend I definetely remember it lasting longer in 1994.
Obviously its great locations and settings ,a nice flowing story, great cast and another postcard of London at the time...

It would be interesting to know exactly how much of that fight was cut and which parts were deemed too violent.

Just watched this episode. It was very good with Ray falling hard for the femme fatale while the pretty girl next door gets the runaround. Its a very good episode coming near the end of my marathon Minder session that started before Christmas.

I thought this was an Excellent episode, with a couple of strands very nicely tied together and Arthur (particularly) and Ray on top form. Arthur spotting a gap in the market and going for it in his usual corner-cutting manner, with that scene with the ticket tout indeed being comic gold, as Dazza said. Too many classic lines to mention. The first British customers were a bit staid but the Arabs were fun, with Mark Zuber (who was of course, Indian) really entering into the spirit of it, showing Arthur up as to his knowledge of the British royal family as well as pointing out that the Middle East did have its own history, plus being a casino expert, all with such charm. The other three with him just seemed to be along for the ride and photos - did they even say anything - maybe they did it without Equity cards! The waxworks were great, Arthur trying one on Dave, getting their names round his neck and finally flogging them - or so he thought. The strand of Ray's two lady friends was great as well - Vanessa was clearly bonkers but irresistible as far as Ray was concerned. I have to say (to answer Ned's point), as they arrived at her place, I did think that Terry would have told her where to get off - he wouldn't have put up with being treated like that - unlike Ray who let the contents of his underwear rule his head. But sweet Marian forgives Ray in the end........aahhhhh. Yup, an excellent episode, and nicely closed out, with Arthur having learnt it isn't something he wants to do any more and Ray and Marian back on.
