Archetypal US tough guy actor. Memorable in loads of films. The Godfather usually gets all the plaudits, but for me his career best was Thief - he had a real tight coiled intensity as Frank. You just knew if he was pushed the wrong way he'd explode. Not necessarily right there, but eventually, and you didn't want to be around when he did.

I agree for me Thief was his best movie he nailed the character Frank in that film.
RIP a great actor

Exuded machismo as Sonny Corleone. Was excellent in Misery (as a writer) which I came upon recently. RIP

The Gambler's another good one, although I think both Paul Sorvino and Burt Young give him a run for his money in the acting stakes.

RIP James Caan. There are many movies I've seen him in but where he plays as minor roles like Bulletproof and Dick Tracy.

Agree with all the above, plus I would add the slick but vacuous TV series 'Las Vegas' where he played the casino boss with a shady military/intelligence past. Masterful in all of them and by all accounts held in the highest esteem by everyone in the profession. RIP Jimmy

RIP James Caan. Was in loads of good stuff. An iconic actor for sure. Big ups to those mentioned along with Freebie and the Bean and Rollerball. Elf and The Killer Elite, loads to mention though. So etc… An actor I’ve always had time for. Off the back of his performance in The Godfather didn’t he win some award like This Years Best Italian American or something daft, only to have to politely turn down the award on the grounds that he was Jewish or something.

A dependable and underrated actor. Rollerball was the first R rated movie I ever saw and I still enjoy it. As a kid, I think the second movie I ever saw him in was A Bridge Too Far. He is certainly memorable in The Godfather and the expanded versions of the film helps show how good he really was as Sonny. Rest In Peace.

Sad to hear. A dependable Hollywood actor and briefly a star name. Particularly like him in Rollerball. Oddly enough, I had no idea he was in The Godfather as I've never seen those films - not my cup of tea.
RIP.

Off the back of his performance in The Godfather didn’t he win some award like This Years Best Italian American or something daft, only to have to politely turn down the award on the grounds that he was Jewish or something. I remember him telling an amusing anecdote about being blackballed when he tried to join a country club. He asked his agent, "It's because I'm Jewish isn't it?" Only for his agent to tell him the members thought he was a genuine mafioso, a made guy "who'd been down town".

He joked when he was doing The Godfather that he was a “German Jew” but “more Italian” than most Italians he knew.

James was in so many good films. Plug him into anything, comedy, action, drama, and the film instantly moved up a notch in entertainment value. Honeymoon In Vegas and Brian's Song are 2 that standout to me when I think back on his performances. RIP.

RIP James Caan. He has even returned to voice the role in the video game The Godfather. That was nice of him.
