What 20th century decade produced the best/most iconic films for you?Pick only ONE!
P.S. Why did you pick that decade then?

Went for the 70's eventually - probably more to do with my age and nostalgia but for starters Godfather I & II, French Connection I & II, Long Good Friday (made in 79 at least), Jaws, Superman, Apocolypse Now, Get Carter, Villain, a peak Bond era from DAF to SWLM etc etc, and that's without Star Wars which I expect will be extremely popular too.

1970s by a country mile.
Still experimental with the film making, whilst at the same time showcasing increased levels of sex, violence and exploitation that had never been seen before.
The 30s, 40s, 50s and in particular the 1960s were good but the 1970s were better. There’s one or two decent efforts from the 1920s but they are a bit creaky nowadays. Even the 80s still had some good stuff - like slasher movies and teen comedies, but beyond the mid 80s at a push everything went to sh1t. Not exclusively like but mostly.
If I could have chosen a second decade it would have been 1960s. Likewise if I could pick a rolling decade it would probably be from ‘66-‘76… Probably.

No 80s?
Rambo, Commando, Back To The Future, Ghostbusters, The Karate Kid, E.T., Gremlins, Indiana Jones, Conan, Full Metal Jacket, Beverly Hills Cop, Terminator, Die Hard, Nightmare on Elm Street, Poltergeist, National Lampoon's Vacation, Blues Brothers ...

Tough one... My favourite film is from the 1980s (The Blues Brothers), my fave Woody Allen era's the 70s, James Bond era is the 60s, favourite Alfred Hitchcock era is the 50s... but I'd have say the 1920s for all the amazing Fritz Lang films of that decade (particularly Mabuse, Metropolis), the sublime Buster Keaton films, Nosferatu, Harold Lloyd, Hitchcock's The Lodger, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari and British silents like Underground and Shooting Stars from Anthony Asquith...
This of course probably makes me seem a terrible pseud, but those films are particularly special to me.

There’s a number of excellent 80s films but overall I much prefer the 1970s, easily. Most of those films you mention are nostalgia driven kids films. Conan The Barbarian is superb though.

Difficult choice, I mostly like old films (and old Movie Stars), I haven't got many films, from the past few decades, less than 100, from the 1980's, and just over 220, from the 1970's, the two decades which I have got the most films from are the 1950s (over 670) and the 1960's (just over 500), I will have to have a good think before choosing a decade.

Maybe having a mother who simply won't stop talking gave me the impetus to get into silent movies...

I can’t choose, I liked the weird counter culture or bizarre films from the 60s and 70s but have good memories of the big hits of the 80s and one of my favourite films is Oh Mr Porter with Will Hay from the 30s

70s for me. Some great cop thrillers and gangster films from the era plus a lot of French and Italian movies that i didn't know existed until Arch gave me a lend of them, really good stuff. Also a time for some good British TV comedy series spin offs like Porridge, Likely Lads, Dads Army etc.
Plus, my favourite two films come from this decade - 'Villain' and 'The Warriors'.

So in my case your hypothesis doesn’t quite work. I’m not opposed to 80s stuff but only because of movies like The Thing and all the T&A slasher and teen comedy movies that I grew up with etc.. Plus a few action movies which are fun.

It’s an interesting hypothesis but overshadowed by the fact that the 1970s was a cracking decade for cinema. Just too many good films. Every decade has stand out movies but the 1970s was so good.

The first film I ever saw in the cinema was The Jungle Book. So about 1968. Then Bedknobs & Broomsticks and then Dad's Army. The first Bond film I ever saw at the cinema was Live and Let Die. The films that have scared me the most, impressed me the most and blown my mind the most, upon their release, were Jaws, CE3K, Alien, Dawn of the Dead and Star Wars. So, for me, it's got to be the 1920s!
LOL
Only joshing.
No, for me, and for the reasons stated above, it is obviously the 1970s.

True that is why I was being difficult Everyone has an all time favourite film over all the others so it is possible.

Union strikes,Unemployment etc etc Unemployment was a lot lower in the 1970s than the 1980s, when there were over 3.5 million on the dole at its peak, plus another million on the sick. But, yeah, strikes, lots of them. Just like now. The main difference being the workers used to win in the 1970s!
