Dennis Waterman had a rare quality inasmuch as he was so easy to relate to, but also some of his acting was fantastic. The rapport between Dennis and GC in Minder was something special, you can't just act that.
But the relationship between Dennis and John Thaw and some of those scenes in The Sweeney were just beautifully understated. Totally believable, really special.

Totally deveasted.
We have all been brought here largely because of Dennis Waterman. He captured the imagination with his performance as Terry McCann. What a legacy you have left us, a sad day indeed for the patrons of this forum. RIP Dennis

Apologies if this is in bad taste.
Local Notes There was much sadness in the local area on Sunday with news of the sudden passing of popular local man Terrence (Terry) McCann at the age of 74.
A native of the area, Terry was a successful and highly talented boxer in his younger days and was tipped as a future British champion before injury cut short a highly promising career. He retained a lifelong passion for the sweet science and his words of encouragement and advice were much sought and valued by any aspiring local fighter.
Football was Terry's other sporting interest, and he was to be found at Craven Cottage and Stamford Bridge on alternate weekends. Only days ago he had celebrated the Cottagers' promotion to the Premier league.
Terry was employed for many years with the local firm of A.E. Daley Ltd, chiefly in the motor and general wholesale trade departments of that concern. He would regale any company with the often hilarious escapades he enjoyed in his time with the firm.
He will be remembered as a friend to all, always ready with a sympathetic ear and a helping hand to all who needed it, without seeking anything in return. Terry will be sadly missed by his many friends in local sporting and business circles, and the community as a whole.
Rest in Peace.

For very obvious reasons, Terry McCann character will always be fondly remembered.
One of my favourite films of its genre is Up The Junction. Always liked 'kitchen sink' dramas and this is one of the finest.

Very sad news. Minder and The Sweeney are my two favourite TV programmes ever and you were in them both playing DS George Carter and the brilliant Terry McCann. Now reunited with Arthur and Dave having a light ale at the Winchester Club in the sky.
Thanks for the memories and may you RIP Dennis.

Nothing to add, really. Shocked and saddened. The end of an era. Only 74, but by God, he crammed a lot of living into those 74 years.
The script that I was working on that centred around Terry and Chisholm, whilst introducing a new collection of characters at the car lot and lock-up, will now probably go in the bin!

Very shocked to hear this (saw it on Yahoo website when I logged onto my email) always expected him to live to a good age. Wonderful in every role I saw him in and as well as the ones mentioned so far thought I'd add I loved him as Tony Carpenter in 'On The Up'.
He always made acting look so effortless and you really believed he was who he was playing. Dennis and George's acting abilities and friendship that clearly came through on screen made Minder the success that it was. So hard to believe 'young Terry' has gone.
RIP

Just been told that Dennis has died, I am shocked , now at the great Winchester bar with George and Glynn. Obviously everyone on the forum knows the body of work he has left behind starting as only a child actor. RIP I was watching "Snowball" (1960) only the other day on Talking Pictures TV - that was one of the first things he starred in, according to IMDB.
I'll remember him for The Sweeney, Minder, Stay Lucky and New Tricks.
My late mum and I watched snowball on talking pictures last year and both really enjoyed it

When my parents divorced in the mid 1970s,I used to see Dad on Thursday nights, we used to watch the Sweeney and then later on Minder and Dad would take me home at 10pm on the dot.
RIP the fantastic Dennis Waterman

Absolutely gutted too - the last time I felt this way about someone I've never met was back on 5th August 2015. Very sad news indeed, for me it feels as though the last of the iconic actors from the series I've loved since I was very young has passed, the end of an era. George Cole 5/8 Dennis Waterman 8/5

I can't really add to the excellent and heartfelt comments above. I'd like to pass on my condolences to Dennis's wife and children.
Regan may have been "guv" but you, Dennis, were "The Governor".
RIP.

Made it look easy. A selfless actor on screen too. Always (to me) looked like a giving performer and made everything I ever saw him in good. Rest in peace, Dennis Waterman.

When I heard the sad news about Dennis, today, I was shocked and saddened, for a while (after hearing the news), I went quiet (was lost in thought), Dennis is someone who I have looked up to for a long time.
Just like everyone else on this forum, Dennis has given me hours and hours of viewing pleasure, and will continue to give me many more hours of viewing pleasure, in the future.
Terry McCann, will always be my favourite Dennis Waterman role, when I think of the theme song for Minder - I could Be So Good For You, I think the following thoughts - Dennis Waterman was definitely good for me.
R.I.P. Dennis Waterman.

We only just heard this sad news a few hours ago this morning in Australia.
Very sad to hear this. Dennis was well loved in Australia and visited the country often.
Tributes on our news coverages have focused on showing clips from Minder and the theme song to Minder but also mentioned his outstanding work in the Sweeney and New Tricks. A lot of the commentators have mentioned that they had met and partied with Dennis when he was here and had respect and warm feelings for a man who never had 'tickets on himself' despite his fame.
His last acting job was an Australian comedy film called 'Never Too Late' released in 2020.
Far too soon. I would have liked to have thought that Dennis would be enjoying life way into his nineties.
RIP Dennis Waterman

I’m speechless, saddened and shocked at the passing of Dennis, yet another familiar face from our youth that we had an affectionate affiliation with gone forever. Thanks for all the amazing memories you helped create over the years making your roles look so effortless and believable and for me your many roles in particular minder, sweeny and new tricks were a real sense of escapism. Ride easy RIP Dennis

Devastating news. A TV legend who has been on the small screen every decade since the 70s. TV has taken a notch downward, considering they will be going forward without him.
RIP Dennis

It had not made the news here in Germany. Anybody know what happened as Wikipedia only stated he died in Spain?
