Very sad news that Peter Bowles has died at the age of 85 from cancer. He was in so many things that I watched growing up such as The Avengers, The Prisoner, The Persuaders!, The Saint, The Baron, The Protectors, Space:1999 to name but a few. Always thought he would have been a great guest star to have had in Minder. uk.style.yahoo.com/peter-bowles-has-died-85-111955497.html?RIP.

Great actor. Yes, he appeared in just about everything of note. The first episode of Survivors is, in my opinion, possibly the best opening episode of any TV series. It's still as powerful today as it was then and Bowles' ultimate fate provides the biggest shock of the entire episode. And he was brilliant as Baylor in End of Eternity. One of the greats. RIP.

An absolutely superb, urbane presence in TV and film (and I presume also on the stage, but I never had the good fortune to see him live). One of those stars with a saucy twinkle in the eyes - good in everything he did and always highly watchable.
Sadly now joins his fellow actor from The Bounder, our own much-missed George Cole.
RIP. A star.

Yes, very sad news. As said above, an actor who was in just about everything and always good. I was only watching the first series of 'To The Manor Born' again recently and he was excellent as Richard DeVere aka Bedrich Poulouvicka. RIP

A real legend from the golden age of UK television, also starred in the highly successful but often overlooked comedy drama The Irish RM in the 1980s. RIP

Yes a great actor who was always himself whether in a serious or comic part.
R.I.P. Peter Bowles.

I wonder if his role as the urbane but slippery intelligence man in The Bank Job was a nod to his original Callan appearance. I believe he originated the role of Gangster Number One on the stage, and as I recall he's listed as a producer in the film credits. I'd like to have seen his intepretation of the part. Always a reassuring presence on screen, even if he was playing a bad guy, he was just one of those actors who you knew was going to turn in a good performance.

One of my very favourite actors.
Plus he looked exactly like my uncle both facially and especially his way of speaking/ mannerisms.
Ive never seen the Bounder and hope to soon.
Rest in peace Peter

...one of the best episodes of Rising Damp too
Sad news indeed , he was a wonderful actor with a superb list of credits to his name and could effortlessly glide between different genres (drama, comedy etc)
RIP Sir

Another very familiar face from growing up in the 70s and 80s. Especially 'To the Mannor Born' which drew big viewing figures at the time. Also remember him with Brian Murray in the Irish RM.

Yes, this is very sad. As is illustrated above he was in so many things, very varied shows, and he was always excellent. A few years ago he turned up as Brian Pern's father in the spoof documentaries, he was brilliant in that, only a cameo role really. But a major contributor to British film and television for decades.

Very sad to hear this news.
He also puts in a wonderfully funny performance in my favourite episode of Rising Damp, called ‘Stage Struck’ from 1977. So fantastic he even outshines Leonard Rossiter in this one.

Absolutely rubbish news! Big fan of Peter Bowles, pops up in loads of stuff from back in the day. To me he’ll always be Archie Glover (Only When I Laugh) though. He became almost typecast by that upper class bounder type character…. In fact talking of The Bounder, that’s what I’m going to watch in a minute. RIP Peter. One of my absolute favourite tv actors of all time. given the right role and there was no one better.

I bought his autobiography a while ago but never got round to reading it, so am starting to do that now. It is very entertaining. Rex Harrison comes over as pretty obnoxious. He has a lot of good stories though. When he started out he was told he would never play Englishmen, which was true of a lot of his early stuff, and his agent told him that he would be a star but not until he was over 40, which was very true.

Another superb actor has left the stage.
For his many appearences on our screens (140 credits according to IMDB) he will always be best known to me as Guthrie Featherstone from Rumpole of the Bailey, whose appearences with Leo McKern (as Rumpole) were always brilliant TV. I also liked him in Lyttons Diary and which I will have to dig out my DVDs and have a rewatch.
Sad news.
RIP

Whatever he was in was a guarantee of quality and I would also say that his performances in Rumpole were amongst the most superb. I am still enjoying his autobiography. He seriously aggravated Roger Moore once when he was in the Persuaders by telling him that he heard Tony Curtis was awfully good, not realising that Roger was a bit paranoid about his co-star at the time. He gives a strange account of Patrick McGoohan when he was in The Prisoner. He also claims that once when he was in Panto and was playing the Wolf he had to wear a false tail which caused an embryonic tail of his own to start to grow at the base of his spine. According to his book this can happen when hair follicles are stimulated enough, they band together and respond to some evolutionary trigger to try and grow back as a tail. But it is a good read, he will be missed.

I watched 'Lyttons Diary' a couple of years ago and PB had the character off to a tee. Well spoken, well educated and used to the finer things in life - spot on.
RIP.

Stuck on an episode of the Thames Morecambe and Wise Show last night and who should pop up in a sketch but Peter Bowles. It appears this 1981 credit (Series 2, Episode 5 - 29.9.1981) doesn't register on Peter's IMDb screenography...
Nice little skit with Peter just about to embark on The Bounder, I suspect.

He mentions it quite a bit in his autobiography. He says Eric and Ernie constantly adlibbed in the rehearsal but wouldn't let him do the same, reminding him that they did the jokes. Then when it came to record they were word-perfect. Only later did he discover that they read the whole thing off cue cards behind his head.
