Yes, they were actually very talented and ‘Nez’ the most talented of the four.
RIP.

Sad to hear this, 78 isn't old. My first introduction was through the TV show in the late 70s and early 80s. He had a few solo hits too I think, Flying Down To Rio was one I really liked a lot. Mike hit the capitalist jackpot when his Mom invented Tippex. Ker-ching, he inherited millions. Was still performing up to this year, with Micky Dolenz, so it must have been a short illness. Wrote Different Drum in the early 70s which was a big hit for a Linda Ronstadt fronted band. Cool song. Cool guy. RIP Mike.

It is said that he & Peter Tork were the more serious members of the band, but their comedy acting came across really well. I do think The Monkees were under-rated, and Mike's song 'Listen To The Band' is sublime - check out the version on their 1969 TV special R.I.P. Mike Nesmith.

Mike was certainly the most talented out of the bunch. My mum actually knitted me a green bobble hat in the early 70s, even though I wasn't a fan of The Monkees.
It was claimed Nesmith's mother either invented or started the company Tippex.
RIP Mike Nesmith

It’s kind of weird. The night before his passing I was listening to some of the songs he wrote for The Monkees. His early solo stuff is very good. I became a fan of The Monkees when I was very young watching the reruns on CBS Saturday at noon. Always enjoyed the show and the music.
Rest In Peace Mr. Nesmith. Thank you for all the music and entertainment

Sad news , I always enjoyed their TV show and as has been previously mentioned , they were an unfairly underrated band who made great 60s Pop
RIP Sir

Have to admit the TV shows were quite zany.
Think one of the reasons for them being underrated is because every interview, their post-heyday period, when asked about them being a manufactured band, most of them, especially Davey Jones, would get quite cross -- which was pretty funny seeing his half-smiling, half angry face. Dolenz tried to joke his way through the question. But Peter Tork and Nesmith were pretty realistic about their fame IIRC.

One of the first songs he wrote and produced for The Monkees. He wasn’t allowed to play on his own songs then but was thrown a bone by being allowed to produce it. According to Peter Tork, Nesmith was able to slip him into the sessions as one of the guitar players.

Another early Nesmith gem performed live by The Monkees in 1967.

Lennon answered that he thought The Monkees were the greatest comedy team since The Marx Brothers and that he never missed their show. I believe Nesmith and Mickey Dolenz visited the Abby Road Studios during the sessions for Sgt. Pepper.
