When I saw him interviewed, maybe on a retrospective about Blue Peter, he came across as a very genial guy (though probably one who didn't suffer fools gladly) who put the needs of children first in his programmes. I hadn't realised that he'd been married to Dorothy Smith who wrote some of the biographical illustrated stories that Blue Peter had occasionally. I've updated his entry on IMDB, although it's still waiting to approve and publish his more precise dates of birth and death taken from his obituary in The Times - epaper.thetimes.co.uk/the-times/20210910/282681870376532 is a version that doesn't require a subscription to The Times.
