I wonder why Arthur/Ray's Ford Transit used in this episode was a silverish brown one (doesn't sound like a colour but thats what it looked like). We see Dave arriving in it to collect the wine (after Arthur gives him the keys in the Winchester and tells him to use it) and when Ray sees it drive off through the window at night it looks to be the same one and not the usual pale blue one. Did this van appear in any other series 8 episodes? (I'm not as familiar with series 8 as I am with 9 & 10). This was the first to be filmed so logic tells me that's probably the reason the van might be slightly different. I wonder then if the opening titles that feature the regular pale blue Transit were filmed after the first episode was filmed for hence the different van. I had (like the minder.org episode guide suggests) thought it was Daves's van at first but on seeing what looked like the same van being stolen from Ray's view of the window rechecked the scene of them in the Winchester Club so see Arthur tell Dave to take the van and pass him the keys.

Well, it was a game of two halves, Brian. Arthur getting into the wine business, trying to convince people it isn't a new venture ("I'm particularly delighted see a few new faces"), Ray getting into the groove and trying it on with the ladies - and the milk teeth knock-back - brilliant! Collins is a nice smooth villain, Dimitri is gold, and Arthur's brush with the dentist and the after effects are all good stuff. But then that lengthy nonsense in the lift - strewth. You'd have to be someone like Laurel and Hardy visually or Morecambe and Wise verbally to pull that off, I'm afraid, and even then you might not succeed. Nope - that was painful - wallowing down in the Poor - though not actual Rubbish. If they had condensed the time down massively and used it well it would have been OK - difficult to know the thinking behind spending all that time on it. So that takes a solid Good to almost Excellent down to an Average, I'm afraid.

Series 8 is my least favourite series and it can be mildly painful for Terry fans getting to series 9 and 10 which are on the whole a lot better.

Good episode. Nice mix of comedy (particularly the post-dentist Arthur) and drama (I actually thought the lift shaft stuff was quite tense and felt for George Cole playing that scene). Enjoying the Ray Daley episodes so far - wasn't entirely convinced that I would - believe it or not until last week I'd never seen a single one!

Enjoying the Ray Daley episodes so far - wasn't entirely convinced that I would - believe it or not until last week I'd never seen a single one! This was the first one to be filmed, with to date, an unknown different plod to Morley subsequently replaced - more info on the Morley thread. The Ray series are a bit of a slow-climbing rollercoaster in terms of quality, all good but they dip as they find themselves becoming a great show. Sadly this particular series (as I've said a few times on here) is probably the worst out of the three where as series 10 has some real crackers in there. Nevertheless it's a very enjoyable rollercaster making it to 1994 with Gary Webster. As much as I'd love to improve my average vote for this one, I can't.

That's encouraging, as I'm enjoying them so far and you're saying they get even better.
