Sad to lose a solid former England player on the eve of the big game. I always remember his goal against Hungary sent England to Spain '82. Great forward for Ipswich during their late 70s/early 80s heyday.
RIP Sir

Sad news, he was always a player I liked when I was a boy. And 68 is no age these days

Given the dominance of Liverpool etc at the time he attracted a lot of attention, this Irish kid saw him on Match Of The Day and in the pages of Shoot! magazine. RIP

Paul Mariner - one name that kids on my street pretended to be when we played football on the street in the 80s. He was huge back in the day.
As JJ days, the cover of Shoot! He was a real idol.
It's a sad loss on such a big occasion and actually it would be quite fitting to remember him before today's game. I really hope they do.

Sad news, with a Plymouth Argyle link, both as a player and briefly manager. He was a very useful centre forward, probably could have gone to a bigger club, whilst with the ‘over achieving ‘ Ipswich team. Obviously went to Arsenal. Also remember seeing him playing for Pompey at Argyle in 86/87 season.

Until a couple of years ago I was regular listener of the Alan Brazil breakfast show on TalkSport. Brazil mentioned Paul Mariner on many occasions and always highlighted what a great player he was. He also opined what a hard man Mariner was and remembered clearly Mariners tactic of kicking his opposite number in the shins whilst the teams were in the tunnel waiting to go onto the pitch and advising them that whenever they got near the ball he was going to kick them up in the air!
Hardly Queensbury rules but good old fashioned football that we all enjoyed.
RIP.

I recall an uncle of mine saying his team's centre half used to punch forwards in the kidneys when they went up for a ball. That'd put you off a header. I had an Ipswich strip to wear for school football when Bobby Robson put together those great sides in the late 70s. The Blues had a real charisma about them then, with Paul Mariner, Alan Brazil, John Wark, Arnold Muhren, etc.

Only slowly declining after Robson left to manage England. I remember you telling me that story about him intimidating players in the tunnel, didn’t he also used to “backwards head Butt “ at corners, clearly recall the Talksport story. They concluded that him, Lampard senior and Billy Bonds were amongst the hardest of the hard (but fair in the later two cases) of the era, amongst many hard men.

Also, whilst on this subject - wasn’t Andy Gray of Villa, Wolves & Everton another noted hard man in that Talk Sport feature?
A FB Plymouth Argyle group led the tributes to him, with a series of photos in Argyle and mainly Ipswich days, along with an Arsenal and England photo, no Pompey one though….. I wonder why!?!….
