Only forgotten by those who didn't realise that someone had to 'mind the house' while Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the moon, and as he orbited around the dark side of the moon alone he realised that he had gone further away from the Earth than any lone human ever had before. On one side of him he had every human being alive, and on the other side of him it was a case of 'who the hell knows?' Always said he was fearful of what could go wrong on the mission, which is the hallmark of astronauts, NASA never wanted 'gung-ho' types. He also knew that if the others couldn't return to him and were stranded on the moon then he would be returning to Earth alone. Remarkable men. RIP

Sorry to hear this.
As some of you may remember, I read his book, 'Carrying the Fire', a couple of years ago. I'm glad he lived to see the 50th anniversary. These guys were proper heroes.
R.I.P.

Sadly his passing isn’t getting the attention it deserves here in the U.S. A true American Hero in the traditional sense. Like Neil Armstrong he was remarkably low key about his accomplishments.
Rest In Peace

It takes a special kind of a person to know that while you're absolutely integral to the mission, if it goes well you're unlikely to get much of the credit, and if it goes badly you'll either all be dead or you'll be the only one returning home and carrying the can for the two that are. All the early astronauts were amazing human beings. RIP

When he was piloting Columbia he was said to be the most isolated person in the universe. The two astronauts on the Moon were in constant contact with the Earth but as he continued in lunar orbit he could only be in contact with Earth for 15 minutes in each orbit, 238,000 miles from Earth and 60 miles from his fellow astronauts.
