Missing on his last episode ever filmed eh? That's interesting thanks Swainy...I'd never thought before that this was DWs last Minder to be filmed!

Well I (and I think jno thinks this too) was always under the impression that the way this episode turned out, was the reason that Dennis Waterman quit the show. Makes me wonder if he stormed off set or just went down the pub and didn’t want to come back

I just watched this for the first time and I think it was a really poor episode. There was too much about it that is detached from what Minder is all about; London, Working Class settings, believable rogues etc. In addition we get Arthur as not so much a loveable rogue but actually a really selfish pig of a man who really thinks of No 1 only. Chisholm’s character was also a bit of a cartoon parody of a security guard and the hiring of a helicopter was just absurd. I understand the aspect of Terry inside and contrary to many I thought Richard Briers was excellent as the totally crackpot wannabe soldier. The whole episode could have been half decent but it really just degenerates into farce . A couple of funny bits, Rycott seeing AD driving the armoured vehicle is one and then Rycott telling the prostrate ‘Soldier’ who is unconscious ‘You’re nicked’ then legging it. Otherwise, a sad episode that does nothing to the Minder brand. However, still a lot better than the Shane Ritchie years....

Forum favourite Richard Briers in this press photo for this episode. Note how Jones is only a detective constable in the description. Shocking.

We'll never know how this one would have turned out if Tony Hoare's original story had been used, however it's very likely it would've been considerably better than the version which made it to the screen. A classic case of upstairs meddling resulting in what at best can be regarded as a mediocre Minder.

It's certainly on the series 7 set from Australia, however this (together with series 8) is a region 4 DVD set. It's presently on a certain video sharing site we all know if you search, uploaded as usual without the consent of the copyright owner.

I dislike how Chisholm is in this and in Minder On The Orient Express he is like a cartoon character and the opposite to how he was in the earlier series

The episode on that site you allure to is in pretty bad shape quality wise. I have the entire Dennis Waterman Years on DVD + Minder on the Orient Express as a separate DVD but this one I do not have.

I reckon ITV wanted a more upbeat and lighter Minder with this edition, partly as it was a Christmas special and also to compete with Only Fools & Horses, even if in '88 they weren't screened at the same time. However, Minder wasn't a sitcom and ITV would have been better leaving Tony Hoare's original idea as it was. Mucking about with Tony's script ruined the story and left it without any real impetus or direction. Positive aspects about this one are due to the skill of the actors doing what they could with what remained of Tony Hoare's input.

Watched this last night with 'Er Indoors. First time I've ever seen it, I think. I certainly don't recall seeing it before (but then with my memory, I often think the same of 'Er Indoors).
I liked the way that they'd allowed for time moving on in the three year gap between Minder on the Orient Express and this 1988 special. The plot veers almost into Avengers territory, with a heist being planned by former military personnel who are fully paid up nutters. Not sure if it really works as Minder, but all told it's an entertaining episode, there's a wonderfully comedic comeuppance for Chisholm, and hell, they even hired a helicopter. Richard Briers resists the temptation to camp it up (if only he'd done the same in Doctor Who!) and Taggart crosses over to the Minder universe as a bent security officer. As does the then Mrs Bill Nighy (Diana Quick).
Like Orient Express, it has a bit of an epic feel to it. Not entirely sure that ever suited Minder, but credit where it's due, it's an entertaining return for Minder after three years in the wilderness.

Coming hot on the heels of Orient Express, this was okay but felt a bit lacking. Terry and Arthur were generally fine and the stuff between them was very good and their dealings with everybody else was up to snuff. But the story line with all the coincidences was too contrived and that was not how Chisholm would have ended up after life as detective - we knew it, Rycott knew it, Jones knew it. As people have said, that's not how many of us would have like to see Patrick Malahide depart the show - although I thought he was great in the final scenes as he went (quite understandably) bonkers. Worth a watch but we have been spoilt with so much better.

It's too much to hope for though, it's a shame that Ofcom don't ban repetitiveness, but how this will ever be implemented is beyond me! Maybe they could set a minimum spend for original programming for channels or something? But yeah, I am not sure. As for the episode, yeah, the whole Terry going back to prison thing didn't really do it for me. Out of the two Minder specials, I find that this is the weaker of the two. They had some good bits, agreed, especially with Chisholm going into private security and losing it at the end, but Arthur selling dodgy contraceptive pills and supplying old military surplus gear to a paramilitary leader seemed too far-fetched for my tastes. Just out of curiosity, what happened to Dave's motor? If I'm not mistaken, it's one of the only motors we've seen him driving - it's a Ford made in 1980, think it might be an Escort MK II, registration number PLC 702W. According to the DVLA website, it has been untaxed as of the first of March, 1996. That car's a MkII Fiesta, very similar to one I used to own. A very simple machine with a 1 litre engine and brakes that you had to make an appointment with to operate.

I don't remember watching this first time round, but watching today enough of it came back to me to convince me that I had seen it before. Shows how (un)memorable it was. That said, it was not unwatchable although the plot (as finally edited) was a bit comedic. I didn't like Chisholm's non-copper role. Nice to see actors of the calibre of Richard Briers and Simon Williams play their parts. As others have said, it was perhaps indicative that the time had come for DW to leave the show, as Arthur had become the principal character for some time now.
