Met him a couple of times and he was exactly how you would want him to be - warm, friendly and humorous. He lived in the same house in Childwall for many years and was always happy to chat with fans. A lot of sports broadcasters owe a huge debt to him and Jimmy Greaves for the way they presented what was essentially a highlights and preview show.
RIP.

Saint and greavsy was a great show. I remember them laughing at their own spitting image puppets too. Nothing seemed to be taken too seriously

Sad news. A Liverpool great - if before my time - and as above Saint and Greavsie was essential viewing for 1980s Saturday lunchtimes. The forerunner to the way modern-day football is covered in many ways with S&G basically as pundits, very much contrasted to MOTD and The Big Match which just featured Jimmy Hill or Brian Moore talking to camera and presenting the coverage in a matter of fact way.

Sad news indeed. Once of the many Jocks who went south of the border to great success.
I remember the BBC Scotland programme 'Spirit of Shankly' from around 2 years ago and the Saint appeared in it and cried whilst he was speaking about the man, very sad to watch.
Saints and Greavsy was great TV back in the day.
RIP Ian

He was a great player. As a kid I went to his testimonial match at Anfield so I did see him play. Another loss from a great era.

Very sad news.
Before my time, but in the 1960's, Ian St John and Roger Hunt, were a great strike partnership, for Liverpool.
Ian St John, scored the extra-time winner, which won Liverpool, their first FA Cup, in 1965.
I have happy memories of watching Saint and Greavsie, from the mid 1980's to early 1990's.
R.I.P. Ian St John.

RIP Saint. Loved S&G on a Saturday lunchtime. Made a nice change from the Football Focus of the era which was information over entertainment every week.

Sad to see this come up this morning. Saint & Greavsie was essential viewing every Saturday lunchtime for years. Short highlights and a bit of banter with the St. playing the straight man to Greavsie's tomfoolery. Neither a political message nor boring player interview in sight.
One of those deaths that make you think of the time that has passed, but it all seems so recent. We're losing that generation bit by bit now.

A good read that and showed that football was a good escape route out of poverty back in the day. The Saint started off working in the Steelworks and his team mate Ron Yates worked in a meat slaughter house in Aberdeen prior to his move south. Really highlights the difference between then and now.

Just missed out on Ian's playing career. But remember him from On The Ball and of course the wonderful S&G. There was the banter and the jokes but they both spoke with authority of being great players. Always kept events in perspective. Some of today's pundits and so called supporters could learn from watching S&G.

I was watching on YT an interview S&G did with Ian Rush as he was leaving to go play in Italy. It was all so natural and relaxed and casual. The show was a hype free zone before the Sky 'revolution'. Martin Tyler was a roving reporter on it. I loved it, there's a good few episodes up on YT.
