An actor who has appeared in a wide range of television programmes like 'New Tricks', 'Lovejoy', 'The Bill', 'Bergerac', 'Boon' and 'Tropic'. Personally I remember him best from the 90's BBC drama 'The Riff Raff Element' in which he played the very snobby head of the house. He was 80 RIP.

He was particularly good at playing outwardly respectable types with something to hide e.g. in the TV adaptation of John Le Carre's A Murder of Quality and more latterly Doc Martin. Given how prolific he was it's surprising he didn't make an appearance in any of the holy trinity - he'd have fitted right into Minder as one of the dodgy public school/posho types that used to feature from time to time.

I remember him as George Orwell in a play about him... must have been well before 1984, but covered the period during which he wrote it.

Sad to learn - he had a terrific lengthy career and was always first rate (Zulu Dawn probably being my favourite of his performances)
RIP Sir
