TV, film and documentary director, probably most famous for the "Up" series which started in 1964 and has tracked the then 7 year-olds every 7 years throughout their lives. The news has also been quoting him as the director of the Bond film 'The World Is Not Enough' which I barely even remember, for me his notable works are the TV film 'P'Tang, Yang, Kipperbang' which we watched in English class at school, and 'Stardust', the mostly-excellent 1974 film of David Essex's Beatles-esque rise to pop superstardom in the 1960s. He also directed the Sting documentary/concert film chronicling his first solo album and tour after The Police, which I had on VHS.
'Coal Miner's Daughter', 'Gorky Park' and 'Gorillas In The Mist' are probably his most recognised and recognisable films, athough I can't say I've seen any of them.

He directed the excellent The Squeeze (1977), one of my favourites.
He also did a couple of efforts like Big Bread Winner Hog. I’ve got Rome but not seen it. Triple Echo was good as was Kipperbang.
A mixed bag really. Lots of stuff I haven’t seen.
RIP Michael Apted.

A mixed bag really. Lots of stuff I haven’t seen. Looking at his imdb listing, he had a very prolific career. Seems to be one of those people who just kept on working. I bet most of us on here have watched something he directed - for me certainly The Squeeze, Gorky Park, Rome and Big Breadwinner Hog. Probably a few more I can't think of right now.

I know of the Up documentary series but have never seen any of it. Forgot he did a Bond movie.

He certainly had an eclectic & cult career. As suggested above, 'Stardust' (1974) was one of the best rock music films (as was the concurrent 'Slade In Flame'), showing the music business realistically.
This realism was a trademark of Apted, as per his '7 Up' series, whilst 'Big Breadwinner Hog' (1969) has been re-appriased favourably, after initially being remembered negatively (if at all) by a grainy copy of the acid attack scene.
R.I.P. Michael Apted.
